There are 700 kids coming to the camp with Penn St. There are 42 colleges participating in the camp. ODU, Penn. St., and then mostly FCS lower level schools. ODU will get great exposure among the campers, and as they say, Penn. St. can't recruit them all. ODU wouldn't be hosting this if they didn't think it is a good idea. I agree with them.

Hopefully these relationships with Penn St., Michigan, etc. can lead to an eventual series on the field.

RE: What Should ODU do....
I hope these camps are billed as a joint Penn State/ODU camp. I hope Bobby and the other coaches take equal time and spotlight. Obviously most kids will look at PSU with more regard, but we should try to present ourselves on the same level and equal partners. As long as we do that, then I agree, there are kids who will come to these because of the PSU or Michigan name who won't be offered by those schools. Hopefully they become impressed with ODU and the coaches, facilities etc. Then we can sign the guys who don't get offers from the other camp partner.
If this is basically PSU comes and rents out our facilities… then we look small time.

RE: What Should ODU do....
This looks like out of the box thinking to me. G5's have to find some way of recruiting top tier talent, and bringing some of them to campus seems like a good first move. Obviously there are no guarantees, but this could be fruitful. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. I applaud BW for being proactive. If he snags one or two high quality recruits from these efforts he'll look like a genius, if not he'll still look like an open minded, aggressive recruiter. Plus, as others have mentioned, down stream benefits could be games we'd never get otherwise and possible referrals for kids the bigs can't use but send our way.

These camps are also a proactive move by the coaches of northern based P5 teams like Penn. St., Michigan, and Michigan St. They know the talent base of prospective P5 talent in the southeast, deep south, and southwest (Texas mostly) is huge, and they are seeking more influence with the players in these areas. That is why the SEC, and coaches like Nick Saban are so vocal in their opposition to these satellite camps. These camps are viewed as necessary for survival by the northern schools, and as a threat to dominance by the southern powers.

Exactly. This is smart by Wilder and the staff. If Nick Saban can't keep Michigan out of Alabama then what chance does ODU, or honestly, anybody have? These schools can host these events anywhere. By being receptive, it means these camps are hosted @ ODU. We get more talented recruits on campus and build relationships with quality programs/coaches.

Obviously facility upgrades and winning lots of football and basketball games. Here's my question. How does Wilder schedule for the future in order to build credibility?
Personally, I'd like to see us start playing AAC teams on a regular basis. Thoughts??
AAC teams are not going to want to play us. They would have little to gain and much to lose. That is why Temple refuses to play us for example, and ECU is not so eager either. We should focus on being the best program in C-USA and not obsess about AAC.
I'm not sure there's necessarily anyone we refuse to play.

RE: What Should ODU do....
Additionally, Coach Wilder has spoken to the benefit recruits receive from these camps. ODUBleedBlue reported there are 42 colleges attending, which means there is more bang for a recruit's buck in attending this camp and additional opportunities to be noticed. Having a school like Penn State or Michigan not only brings recruits, but additional colleges, amplifying the benefit for recruits.
It is easy to be cynical but there is a true benefit to athletes not having to travel to and pay a hundred separate camp fees.

Get one with Michigan as they are paying SMU and UCF $1,800,000 each to play them. Build relationships with AAC schools as we just signed a home and home with Arkansas State. We also got a home and home in basketball as a part of the football deal

Heard the Temple AD pretty much told the ODU AD "no thanks, we're looking for out of conference wins and you're too good". Got that news from someone in the program.

I really hope we can get Temple for an OOC H-H at some point while we are in C-USA. If they're still there when we eventually land in the AAC we'll probably play them all the time, but that could be a long time from now.

Well we have a new AD as of May 19th, so that would be pretty swift. It would make sense in the immediate future, where the most important thing is to rack up wins and continue to build our program. I don't think it's a matter of being scared or having anything against ODU. I'm sure something will happen in the near future.
