You don't think it was wrong and racist for non-native American students, dressed as Indians assaulting a native American EMU student at a party? I was one of the biggest proponents for keeping the Hurons name, but it is time to get over it. It is the Eagles now, some native Americans were offended so we have to honor their feelings and move the hell on.

Bob different timeframes here,
when the name was first changed the tribal leaders supported EMU using the Huron name. How does mentioning that mean I'm some type of racist towards native Americans? It a fact from history.
Stop trying to connect dots that don't exist.

I know you are not, I was referring to the despicable actions of the students mentioned in the article you posted...I was 100% against the changing of the Hurons name too. I thought it was unnecessary and just horribly PC. That said, I am not a native American, my ancestors were not murdered and their land stolen, and shipped off to indian reservations by the white man. Fast forward a couple 100 years and you have the descendants of those same white men, dressed up in traditional indian garb, imitating the ancestors who were slaughtered! I don't think that would sit too well with me if I were in their shoes. The "Eagles" was not a very creative name but it is what it is. I am over this stupid issue. Really, it is best that everyone move on. President Martin's passive aggressive idea of having the Huron logo on the inside flap of the marching band jacket was idiotic. If she had any guts, she would have had it on the outside of the jacket and taken the heat for it instead of trying to put one past the people.

I agree with you that the students mocking native Americans is cruel and stupid.
Yeah I agree with you time to move on.

What are the chances that guys dressed like Indians were "descendants of those same white men," who murdered, stole land, etc? Pretty darn small.
Each person is responsible for their behavior and not the behavior of anyone else.

Didn't exactly mean "literally" but from a race standpoint, white men were responsible for the genocide of the native American people when they killed them and stole their land. That cannot be debated, so as a white man myself, I would say anyone of my race dressing up as an indian stereotype, getting drunk, and assaulting a native American is completely inappropriate and a complete piece of sh*t. Is that a little more clear? Go EAGLES!

RE: Are you kidding me? Here we go again.
If Natives don’t want the names used then it can’t be used. The tragedy here is in the Natives missing the opportunity to use the nickname as a means to raise awareness about the plight of Native Americans in the US. Rather than eliminating the nickname they ought to encourage the use of the name(without the Native face) in conjunction with an accurate portrayal of how the actual Hurons and other tribes lived. In teaching people about the Hurons and Native Americans you will engender a much more aware populace when it comes Native issues.
As it stands few know or care about Native issues. They continue to drink themselves to death in ghettos of poverty they reside in.It’s incredibly sad to see how little is done for the Natives . All this sound and fury over a mascot and so little done for the very difficult problems facing the Native population.
