RE: Board of Regent's Athletic Minutes
For the upcoming meeting that took place Tuesday. It looks like the Pepsi agreement is up for renewal. And we got a nice increase from Adidas.

Link is dead for the second post. Any idea what the Adidas contract looks like now? I'm curious.

RE: Board of Regent's Athletic Minutes
I glanced through it. Not a whole lot of big items although a few caught my attention:

I did see where Chris Spears will report on revenues. I believe Chris handles a lot of day-to-day operations (not unusual that the #2 handles operations). Curious what kind of $ we'll get from road men's basketball games; 2015 football is set but I doubt we know what LSU will pay...

As previously mentioned some interesting contracts like Adiddas and Pepsi. I did notice ESPN3 and 35 events... As this is an EMU regents meeting (not a MAC meeting) sounds like there could be a story there. MAC schools are transitioning to ESPN3 starting last year... There is a thread that some MAC schools are trying to get to ESPN3 (more than simply 3 scheduled to go each year over a 4-year period).

Nothing on facility enhancements. Don't know if that would be part of the full board of regents agenda.

At some point and time, someone has to say 'let there be (new) lights', and a new scoreboard, etc. etc.

Wonder if this kind of matter is handled in executive session.

Thanks, Matt. 31% increase from Adidas. About $525,000 annually. Not bad.

I'll go over the budget numbers later, but ESPN3 is all but confirmed. Discussing the student opportunities to gain experience in this endeavor. 35 events. That is news!!

Looks like we'll raise almost 1M in donations from boosters.

1.75M from NCAA/MAC.

Never saw any $ on road game guarantees, but that information is probably considered privileged.

RE: Board of Regent's Athletic Minutes
The key contract to me is the Pepsi contract that has allowed us to met the NCAA football attendance requirement.

RE: Board of Regent's Athletic Minutes
We get peanuts from home game revenues, but are doing well with Pepsi, Adidas, NCAA/MAC, road game guarantees.

That is why I don't get terribly upset about attendance. Attendance produces a very, very small percentage of our athletic department revenues.

We could give away all tickets free and all Heather would have to do is ask Chris (Spears, assoc AD) to schedule another high guarantee FB or men's bball. "Chris, can you and Rob find another $80K road game to close the budget shortfall."

Instead of playing two marque road games (e.g., UofM, MSU) simply add a 3rd one and pick up another 75 - 100K.

'79, I'm copying your excellent (!!!) find on the athletic budget. It is a cornucopia of information on home and road game guarantees and a lot of other things!!

http://www.emich.edu/regents/meetings/20...361615.pdf

E.g., a see a home FB game with Mississippi Valley State.

I see that they have 250K budgeted as road men's basketball games for this season. To me, that means we'll be playing some very good teams on the road for nice $.

I see road FB games vs. LSU (978K), games vs. Indiana, Rutgers, etc. etc. Nice (!) money from Indiana and Rutgers (they aren't exactly rich like UofM, OSU, PSU, etc.).

Lot of stuff on ESPN3 deal and set up expenses, etc.

An unknown expense is the cost of attendance. We don't have anyone scheduled yet for the $250 for the upcoming year for either men's or woman's basketball.

RE: Board of Regent's Athletic Minutes
BTW, for those who would like to get rid of FB or move down, look at the $ which is coming from FB (2017-18) ($3.6M):

FOOTBALL
Revenues Budget
Game Guarantees
Rutgers $ 850,000
Army $ 150,000
Indiana $ 1 ,200,000

ESPN/Playoff
Conference payment $ 1 ,400,000
TOTAL $ 3 ,600,000

Note on Army - it appears that each home team in these home and home type series gives the road team a modest guarantee (presumably to cover expenses).

Another thought:

I don't know if Chris Spears (assoc AD) handled the negotiations for these road FB games, but whomever did a great job getting top dollar from schools like LSU, Missouri, Indiana, Rutgers, etc.

This is where EMU can bring home some big, big bucks.

Any athlete/competitor/winner will tell you that getting paid a lot of $ to get your a** handed to you is not necessarily something to be proud of. That said, Army, Rutgers, and Indiana are not very good so if EMU can actually compete with them than that is a positive. Bottom line though, they gotta win some damn games and not just get paid money of which none of the players doing the work will ever see a dime.

Bob, yeah but it helps keep our entire athletic budget in line. However we need to do some serious capital improvements in football. I don't have a clue where those dollars will come from.

Well, for starters, I would NOT give the women's basketball coach a substantial raise!!! Let's see, women's basketball is bleeding money and no one cares, let's give the coach more money. Brilliant!

Glad you asked. 07-coffee3

Old Dominion game $ 250,000
Army game $ 150,000

So we will pay Army 150K this September as visitors and they will pay us 150K as visitors. 03-idea

Connecting some dots:

That budget document we are discussing has, as I have mentioned before, some very nice revenue streams based on CONTRACTS which EMU as a full member of the MAC is entitled to share.

Those are the college FB playoffs and ESPN media rights.

As was suggested to me, by someone in the athletic department, why not pledge one of those revenue streams as collateral to have EMU borrow monies for athletic capital expenditures? Supplemented by say 5 - 10M in donations.

As I've suggested before: lights, scoreboard, press box, and maybe replace the football building.

Borrow monies over 15 years (just like a 15 year mtge.) and pledge say the college fb playoff monies as 'collateral' for that borrowing.

After say 15 - 20 years, I'd suspect EMU would need to repeat the process to replace the west side stands which by then will probably be showing too much wear...

The really good news is that the Convo is in excellent shape and doesn't require much to maintain it. Therefore, the $ can be spent on the stadium (at other universities they may need to spend big bucks on their basketball arena).

That is the American way. We borrow to buy houses, cars, etc. and pay them off and then buy another car or house...
