There were plans to go 18 with U. Mass. for all sports, but Temple ruined that plan.
They could still try to go to 18. The rumor schools that could be part of them?
Stony Brook
Fordham
Richmond
VCU (was looking at buying the city's stadium that seats 12,000 and thinking of adding football at the time.)
Delaware
James Madison
Southern Illinois
Western Kentucky
Northern Iowa
Wayne State, Mich. (former founder in the MAC, but now in D2.)
Illinois State
Missouri State
Mankato State
North Dakota State
Indiana State
Liberty
Maine
New Hampshire
URI
Old Dominion
Appalachian State
Charlotte
C. Conn. State

Imagine if they could have snared some of the schools that C-USA and Sun Belt invited?

Why are you so full of crap?

RE: UMass Football
One thing that U. Mass. going for them is that they are a type of school that could be a Big 10 candidate.
They are a research institute, a state flagship of Mass, and a landlocked university. They just need to do is expand until they are ready. Big 10 would be an upgrade for their basketball over the A10.

Can you imagine if UCONN went all sports to the MAC or CUSA to keep its football in an FBS conference...? Gotta protect your best asset. UMass made the right call.

It would likely be a bigger gamble for UMass than UConn. Think about it if UConn was in the MAC I would say it would be near certain to get 2 bids yearly if the MAC keeps going as they have been lately.

If UMass joins they would be a quality basketball addition but they are not good enough on their own to make 2 bids near certain.

Lastly there would be years that UConn could get at large bids on their own but we know that UMass could not in the A10 which would make it even less likely in the MAC.

THe MAC is improving again in basketball but it isn't there yet.

The transition to FBS has been a painful one for UMass to say the least.

UMass made a mistake leaving the MAC. It will likely cost them their FBS program.

Some bad decisions were made in the process for sure. Molnar was a terrible decision...and now unfortunately we'll be losing a conference affiliation when we have a good coach. The timing was bad because it was after a recent run of success (between Whipple's first stint and Don Brown taking over who went a combined 92-45, won one national championship and made it to another) had been gone for a full recruiting cycle under Kevin Morris, which basically ruined everything we had going for us (neither he nor Molnar can recruit...or coach really).

So yeah, it's been painful for more reasons than just the transition.

RE: UMass Football
For the last FBS home game in 2016 it will probably be either UCF or Buffalo, who both have 9/24 open. The rumor is it's UCF.

Scheduling an FCS game for 10/22 is not a problem.

The transition to FBS has not been painful for realists. Going into this transition the real fans knew that it was going to take at least 4 years to start winning games. Former coach Kevin Morris did a horrible job of recruiting after Don Brown left. The cupboard was bare in 2011 and UMass was starting from scratch right when they were moving up to FBS. The real fans were absolutely aware of this. We knew it was going to take a whole recruiting cycle of FBS players and that the first couple years were going to be ugly. We didn't anticipate Molnar being an absolute disaster of a coach, which didn't help, but he did recruit well and you can see that Whipple is making those players much much better.

Casual fans and outside observers who didn't know much about the team going into the transition may have been surprised, but the real fans and supporters knew there would be great struggles on the field.

Whipple is getting this team into form and if Frohnapfel and Sharpe stay healthy this is going to be a great season.

The new AD Ryan Bamford is forming a great team of athletic administrators and they will work on a plan for the stadium and new practice facilities.

This transition to FBS has gone almost exactly as the true followers expected. It's only year 4. Moving up to FBS takes years for most programs to become successful. I told everyone that it would be similar to when WKU moved up, and that's pretty much how it's gone so far.

The one thing UMass has had to deal with more than any other school that's moved up to the FBS is biased negative press pushed by the Anti-UMass Boston Globe and very loud Anti-Sports professors who have no understanding of how college athletics work and want to see all D1 college athletics abolished.

UMass Football is improving and we will continue to do so. This is a growing process that takes many years.

Go UMass!!
