It depends heavily on whether you make the Big Dance and how many games you play ... the A10 NCAA tourney distribution is heavily tilted toward paying the school that danced. I think its somewhere around 75%.

Between TV and NCAA payouts is just over a 1 Million for us (UMass).
There is some debate of distribution of credits on departed members.
They used the even distribution for those credits (725k) and the TV contract is 5 Million split 14 ways. (357k) This is our best guesses and see below link.

RE: UMass Football
What's with UMASS this year. I thought they were suppose to be better than last year under Whipple when they were 3 & 9. I do see 4 out of 6 winnable games to finish the season. What will they do next year in that meat grinder schedule in their future. I only see 4 maybe 5 winnable games there depending on how they finish this year. Hope they aren't backsliding to 1 and 11 seasons like 2011 and 2012 in the MAC. Don't get me wrong I'm pulling for UMASS but I think they should have gone all in with the MAC to build the FB program over time and start having winning seasons at the D-1 level. I know that UMASS is angling for a future AAC spot but with continuing losing seasons like they are going through I don't see that happening even if the AAC loses UConn in the next realignment round down the road. Hope they can turn it around because playing as an independent will be quite a gamble to stay afloat until that dream AAC bid comes calling if it ever does.

RE: UMass Football
The bigger issue, IMO, with UMass Football isn't about wins/losses, or that it is still, for comparison's sake, an infant in FBS football, but rather the attendance issues between Gillette Stadium and Alumni Stadium. If they continue to average 15,000 people at games, or less in some cases, then it will make the rejection of the MAC look even worse (since their comparables are Kent State, Ball State, Bowling Green and Central Michigan).
If people aren't going to games, it's hard to grow a program.

Hear you panite and think well do better than 3-9 this year. Winning games will help attendance. Panite, think if we went all in MAC we would not have gotten 3 out of the 4 current BB recruits, including an ESPN Top 100.

Any development on the 2017 football schedule for UMass? They have 11 straight games scheduled for weeks 2-12, and already have 5 home games (Hawaii, Ohio, Maine, App State, Georgia Southern). Coastal Carolina may be an option because they will count as FBS in 2017. It also seems like it would make sense to move the BYU game to the first week in December (conference championship week) for maximum flexibility to schedule the 12th game.

Have not heard anything, but hope we schedule a game for week 1. Don't like being behind every other team, as there are rules for the number of practices before you first game. You have some good suggestions.
I'm hoping we start playing for the future and give the freshman QB some experience.
That said do not think the problem is mostly with Fro, as the top receivers are banged up.
Quote:Did you notice what has changed over the last two games? Now that both Sharpe and Mills are both playing hurt nobody is getting separation on passing plays. Frohnapfel either has to hold the ball or force it into coverage. With its two offensive playmakers hurt, the Minutemen offense has just stalled. We threw the ball on Notre Dame and Temple. It's not like Whipple suddenly forgot how to coach or Frohnapfel throw the ball. Without our vertical passing game, our offense just does not function. We could really use a bye week to get healthy.
Again, on the unrewarded side, the defense played well enough to win. UMass had only 2 penalties.

BYU probably doesn't want to play 3 road games in a row in November. But, BYU plays at Hawaii in 2017, so they could play an FCS opponent on November 18 and move the UMass game to December 2. But the chances for COLD and snow in Provo go up quite a bit between mid-November and early December...Could be fun!

May not be official until after the holidays, but it's a Group of 5 team - home and home series for Sept 2. Also in the article is a link to another article that includes upcoming TV announcements. It seems pretty clear that will be independent through 2018 and our AD thinks it will not be a huge issue with 2019 and 2020.

Quote:AMHERST – When University of Massachusetts athletic director Ryan Bamford announced back in October a new football scheduling agreement with local rivals Boston College and UConn, it shook up what had previously been set slates of games for 2016 and 2017.
Included in that shake up was a new hole created in the very first week of the 2017 season (Saturday, Sept. 2) after the away game at UConn scheduled for that slot was dropped (along with the 2016 matchup) so that the Huskies could play BC as part of the new deal.
Bamford couldn't disclose exact details with a final agreement still pending, but said UMass is close to being able to announce a new opponent to fill that Sept. 2 weekend.
"I'm very close. In fact, we've agreed with a school, in principle, but have not signed a deal," Bamford said of the game, an away matchup that will be played against a Group of Five opponent as part of a home-and-home series that will come back to either McGuirk Stadium or Gillette Stadium in Foxborough in 2018.
"We've got a deal that I'm hoping to be able to announce. I don't know if we'll get it done by the holidays and I'm not in any rush," he said. "I think it's good to go. Hopefully, we'll get that announced in the next month or so."
UMass' 2017 schedule is full and 2018 10 games scheduled so far 5 home and away.
Sept. 2 at Coastal Carolina <-- updated 12-17-2015
Sept. 9 vs. Old Dominion
Sept. 16 at Temple
Sept. 23 at Mississippi State
Sept. 30 vs. Ohio
Oct. 7 vs. Hawaii
Oct. 14 at South Florida
Oct. 21 vs. Georgia Southern
Oct. 28 vs. Appalachian State
Nov. 4 at Tennessee
Nov. 11 vs. Maine
Nov. 18 at BYU
Bamford had previously said that all six of the team's home games that season could be played back on campus in McGuirk.
In discussing the future of the program as it moves into conference independence, Bamford explained the process of securing games to fill out upcoming schedules as typically being the most difficult part of the process for schools, but one that, for UMass, "hasn't been that hard."
"Do we have the exact formula for what we want to do? Next year's schedule is really competitive, but I'd say that in 2017 and 2018, we've got a good schedule. Just as good as I think we had this year" Bamford said. "We're playing eight opponents that are similar to MAC schools with Old Dominion and Georgia Southern and Appalachian State and some of those caliber teams.
"I'm encouraged by what we've been able to do. I think, in 2019 and 2020, if we had to move into those future years (as an independent), we could do something similar."
Dates official for UConn and Boston College series.
- Sept. 10, 2016: Home vs. BC (Gillette Stadium)
Sept. 1, 2018: Away at BC
Oct. 27, 2018: Away at UConn
Oct. 26, 2019: Home vs. UConn (Gillette Stadium)
Sept. 3, 2020: Away at UConn
Sept. 11, 2021: Home vs. BC (Gillette Stadium)
Oct. 2, 2021: Home vs. UConn (Gillette Stadium)
Sept. 17, 2022: Away at BC
Quote:“In essence, we made changes to our 2016 and 2017 schedules to allow UConn and Boston College an opportunity to start a home-and-home series,” Bamford added. “We fully understand and support that a BC-UConn match-up will help New England college football gain traction nationally. UMass has always believed that the collective goal of the three New England FBS schools should be to collaborate often and build a strong partnership to further enhance the culture of college football in this region. With this news, I think we are making progress on this goal.”

I would love to see Stony Brook in the MAC. That would be an instant rivalry with Buffalo, and it also would have paired nicely with Massachusetts. If there is one school I'd like to see the MAC add, it's Stony Brook.

RE: UMass Football
So...is the honeymoon over between UMass and Mark Whipple?
I thought it was a mistake to bring back the former HC, especially one who coached the program when it was FCS and was not employed the year prior to hire.
That said, as a fan of northeast college football, I hope to see improvements next year.

I don't understand what the hell they're doing now.
They said going Independent would be the death nail to UMass Football.
We would not be able to schedule or recruit.
We've been able to do both. We had our best recruiting class ever, playing a national schedule.
According to 247sports right now the #78 best recruiting class.

He knew his time with us was short. He had some bad coach hires and football scheduling was a ball buster for a new program. Good luck.

Yeah, it gets progressively harder for an independent to get home games after September passes, but if you are going to be on the road in November, playing three dates and ending in Hawaii is not the worst possible scheduling.

Weather and attendance is also a factor for a startup program in CFB-skeptical New England.
Although checking the out-years schedules, there are November home games scheduled in 2017 (FCS Maine), 2018 (BYU) 2020 (Army) and 2022 (Army). OK then.

Here's the rules: an FBS team MUST schedule 5 home games. One of those games can be a neutral site game. The FCS counts as 1 game. So UMASS needs 3 FBS home games, 1 FCS Home game and 1 neutral cite game vs a FBS school to be in compliance.
