Question Can we fill our 7 bowl tie-ins?
Who fills our bowl tie-ins?

Peach - Marshall
HoD - Rice
Arizona - UTEP
NM - UTSA
NO - Tech
St. Pete - WKU
Miami - MTSU
Bahamas - USM

Looking over the schedules lots of opportunity for 6-6 seasons. Don't sleep on USM.

Rather than laughing at us, I suspect what Kruciff is trying to say is "highly doubtful". (Or maybe he's just laughing at us all in good fun...he's a good poster) But I have to agree with his basic assessment. I think 9-3 is about where we will land.

He doesn't have a clue about the 2015 Herd. How do I know? Because I've lived in Huntington for almost 70 yrs and am a die hard Herd fan and I don't know about Birdsong and more. Now the schedule is an obstacle no doubt but I was satisfied being #23 AP and being ranked ahead of the AAC by ESPN this pre season.

I get it but that Marshall schedule is soft. I can see them running the table until they reach WKU.

I certainly hope you are right, but I don't think so. I believe we have very tough games against Ohio (who is improved across the board this year and we play in Athens); Middle Tennessee, FAU and WKU, not to mention our first game against Purdue in QB Birdsong's first outing). Out of those 5 games, there is every potential for a loss in each. I don't consider any of those games to be "soft." Particularly since 4 of the 5 are on the road.

The road games part I agree with. But Birdsong started 13 times at JMU and threw 22 TDs 2013. 3 in one game vs Akron. The fact that he beat out Holcombe who has been in 6 or 7 camps at Marshall tells me they see something in the big redhead. Still no guarantee. And we have came in as a two TD fav over the Boilermakers. I wouldn't bet $100 but I like our chances.

Birdsong might prove to be a revelation for the Herd, but his 2013 stats also include 16 ints. and 31 sacks (I realize that not all of those stats are ever solely on a qb.)

While I understand the sentiment, a.) Marshall, top to bottom, is probably a more athletic team this coming year than last, and b.) I think thou has overstated the threat this year of Ohio and MTSU.

The concern from spring practice is not talent, athletism, or depth. We do have some leadership and mentality concerns. If we can rally around new leaders, this Herd team actually has potential to be a stronger football team next year. We have to see how long it takes for the QB, C, interior DL, MLB (up the middle) to gel. There's no doubt about all the complimentary pieces.

I think if we were to qualify we'd go to the Miami or Bahamas or Boca Bowls (by the way, were is the Boca Bowl on this list), simlpy for the attendance logistics. I mean we took 10,000 to St. Pete but that was before those *closer bowls existed. It'd be crazy if we ever went to the Miami Bowl.

I would guess that the 31 sacks suffered by Birdsong might have had something to do with the picks. He was starting for the first yr.

We don't have the Boca Raton Bowl this coming year... it's a MAC vs AAC matchup in 2015.

Here is an interesting comparison for you. In his first year in the same FCS conference (CAA) Taylor Heinicke threw for 25 TDs with 1 interception and was sacked 13 times. I think the stats you are seeing are more related to Birdsong's 40 time at 4.8/4.9 and lack of escapability in the pocket. I think it will be interesting to see how he does with the Herd, but I would not expect anything much better than what he did at JMU. I gues we will find out this fall.

04-cheers

My comments are tame in comparison to my responses to the ECU fans with delusions of grandeur, over on the AAC board

Pretty sure Marshall's ideal bowl aspirations will hinge on what happens on Friday, November 27th.

I see, though I think if FAU were to become bowl eligible, things would shuffle to put them there.

RE: Can we fill our 7 bowl tie-ins?
I think CUSA has as good a chance as any for a team to get an access bowl bid. There are IMHO three teams that could pull it off. The ideal scenario would be a repeat of the CUSA Champ game with Tech being a two loss team and Marshall being undefeated. That could make it a game changer for whoever wins. Keep in mind that this is the silly season. Everything posted is conjecture at best. Marshall, TECH, WKU could all fall flat and another rise to the top, but I see a chance for three 10 win teams in CUSA and maybe one of them making the PEACH.

Also
AAC will have Memphis, Cincy, UCF, ECU and Temple all beating each other up.
MWC will have Boise, Utah State and Colorado State doing the same.
