Was Robby (sp) Shelton the QB for that season? Seems I remember a late game collapse vs UCLA

I was in the band then - 100 is a bit optimistic. 80 or so is what I remember. Still a high participation rate, given the size of the student body.

I was also in the band then, too. Unfortunately participation was declining. Within a year or two, Holmes McNeely had to bring in some of his high school band member to fill out our 8x8, 64-member marching formation.

To continue with the hijacking of the thread:
The MOB had 305 registered at the beginning of the '75 season
IIRC, undergraduate enrollment was about 2400 then.

About time for these upgrades for a very successful Women's soccer program and average track program.

Just this past indoor season, both the men's and women's track and field teams had FIRST TEAM All-Americans (2 of hundreds in Rice Track & Field program history). I think that the next All-American soccer player will be the first. I hope soccer continues to improve, but just shut up and go away if you want to make ignorant comments.

While I get your frustration with Old Owl's comments (and he has a lot of stupid statements), comparing All-Americans in the two sports isn't fair at all. Track and Field has how many different events when you count indoors and outdoors (40-50?). That's like a possible 300 All-American spots on the first team alone. Soccer had 36 All-American spots (12 for 1st Team, 12 for 2nd Team and 12 for 3rd Team).

If you look at all-region teams, which gets into closer numbers of awards for both sports, Rice had 4 all-Central region soccer players last year including two first-teamers.

And given what track has had to work with the past thirty years, our coaches are miracle workers to perform as well as they have. Facilities are terrible, most junior high programs are in better shape. While these facility improvements are a step in the right direction, it's not enough. I understand they won't even provide proper locker rooms for our athletes.
So I agree with WRC, you should direct your ignorant negative comments at the appropriate targets.

It's also an apples:oranges comparison though...

Winning the conference in track often involves numbers as much as quality... both in terms of participants and events. Also as I understand it, being All-American in some sports involves posting ONE of the top individual performances... while in others it involves an entire season's worth of production and/or team performances.

Are you saying Rice has limited scholarships for track relative to other universities in our conference?

RE: New soccer, track and field facility
I think Rice is fully funded in both women's and men's track, but the economics work against Rice. Assuming we end up with 20 male athletes with some amount of athletic academic aid. Walking on a Rice is a $50K per year proposition....walking on at Texas or UH (or UTSA or UTEP or UAB or Charlotte, etc) is a $10K per year proposition.

In addition, Rice has restrictive policies in providing academic aid to athletes. These economic numbers along with the academic restrictions generally make it much more difficult to amass the number of athletes necessary to compete for a conference championship.

Houston Owl answered this question, but as my response also addressed the 'All-American' issue, it's noteworthy to extend that issue beyond the conference.

A half scholarship at Rice might be worth a lot more than a half scholarship at UH or A&M Kingsville or LSU, but it also leaves a lot more to be covered by the family.
