WKU has hired new Baseball Coach
John Pawlowski, seems like a good hire, the guy has a ton of experience as Head Coach, and would guess has a lot of contacts nationally for recruiting....Also should help us pull in talent in more areas than just Kentucky which will be a good thing...This state has some baseball talent, just not enough to fill 40% of your roster..

This is a very good hire.

I'm surprised that you guys could get someone of this caliber with your piss poor baseball history. He's qualified to more NCAA Tournaments as a head coach than Western has in its entire history.

Though Pawlowski had a sub .500 record in the SEC, he's a proven commodity as a head coach, which is difficult to pull off in a non-power conference.

RE: WKU has hired new Baseball Coach
We do NOT have a poor baseball history-no -it is not stellar-but not poor.MT has a very good program. However, for many years when you were racking up titles in the OVC-WKU was already in the SBC(a much higher RPI league). We were always very competitive in the SBC.WKU joined the SBC in 1982.

From 1982-2000 MT was in the OVC-a much weaker baseball league than the SBC.

All time series: WKU vs MT 120 wins 102 losses 2 ties

Something that I'm sure a lot of you hardcore baseball fans already knew but till the other day I didn't know you are only allowed 11 scholarships on the baseball team...

so most of those guys are using their own money...or a lot 1/2 scholarships

From the same fans that use NCAA Tournaments as a bench mark in basketball. I believe I referenced that in the post. One thing about that league - OVC. We had to win the conference tournament every year to get in. Rarely an at large bid to be had. Once we entered the Sun Belt it was actually easier to get a bid, becuase you didn't have to solely rely on the crapshoot that is college baseball tournaments.

I'm actually complementing you on getting a head coach with more tournament experience than your entire program. Accept it or don't. Makes no matter to me.

It's very a rare a baseball player gets a full scholarship. It then means you only have 10 to spread around the other 24 guys on the roster.

And congrats to your baseball program that has made fewer NCAA Tourney appearances over the last 30 years than our basketball program has.

And for the record I wasn't being a dick. You have a not so good baseball history (which is a fact) yet you guys got a very good coach. And I complemented the Western family on being able to pull off what is a very admirable hire given these conditions. Also a fact.

But as usual Western fans can't reason with reality and even accept a minor complement when its tossed their way. Unwarranted Ego has never been a problem in Bowling Green, so I apologize. You guys have the most awesomest baseball program ever.

It was a BACK-HANDED compliment.Your words-"piss poor baseball history".

-I have a lot of respect for MT and do not think they are p-poor in any sport.

-Just defending WKU by showing the facts; significant lead in head to head series, higher level conference 18 out of last 33 years.

-Yes you have more NCAA appearances. That's great-but does not make WKU baseball p-poor.

College roster usually consists of 35 players so most players get anywhere from a 1/4 to 1/2 a scholarship.

RE: WKU has hired new Baseball Coach
At Tennessee in the 90's, we only gave scholarships to the guys on the 25 many roster - i.e. the conference roster. Anyone else was a walk on. Occassionally, a walk on may earn books or something like that, but it was the exception that anyone would receive money beyond the main roster.

I have to agree. It was a back-handed compliment.

So you guys are saying we historically have a good basketball program then? What makes Western a poor program is three NCAA appearances over a 30 year period. You would use this barometer to describe our hoops program but then it doesn't apply to Western in one of your sports. Amazing.

Regardless of whether it's perceived as a back-handed compliment or not it's a fact that Western's history in baseball is weak and it is that weakness that actually makes this a good hire. If this same guy was hired by Rice, Southern Miss or even MT it then wouldn't have the same connotation. So, consider it a back-handed compliment if you want but the fact remains your new head coach has more postseason experience in the last 10 years all by himself than Western's had in a lifetime. I thought that part was impressive and why the first statement I made was that "this is a very good hire".

RE: WKU has hired new Baseball Coach
Oh let's clarify one more thing about the Sun Belt pre-MT. It was only marginally better than the OVC during those years. It was a one to two bid league. Only once did the Sun Belt have more than two teams in NCAA Regionals in the two decades before we entereted the league.

Only after Middle Tennessee entered the league did the league truly become a top five to seven conference in the nation. With MT and it's three 40-win seasons in the 2000's and the Florida schools coming in was the league able to go from a one to two bid league to a three bids almost annually and four bids on a couple of occassions. So, it's not like the Sun Belt was a top flight conference in baseball pre-2001. It was better than the OVC but not by much. Just to clarify.

Piss poor was probably a poor choice of words. Mediocre history may be more accurate.

Piss poor = slang in the south...no?

I use that phrase all the time. Again, apologies to the frail egos of my friends to the north.

just glancing it looks like we went to the ncaa baseball tourney in 2004, 2008, and 2009. so that's 3 times in the last 11 years. not the abortion that mtsu hoops is.

one bid since the 80's?

and i love baseball. was torn because i know matt myers personally. this guy looks like a good hire. he's certainly been all over the country in his coaching career.
