Israel developing Silicon Desert
Deep in the Negev desert, and beyond the range of Hamas' rockets, Israel is developing a high tech hub adjacent to Ben-Gurion University. The area was originally to include Israel's cyber-warfare center and the Army's high tech commends (think Fort Meade), the concentration of Israel's tech savvy workforce has attracted many commercial operations. As of now, companies that have located, or have committed to locating in the Negev, include: EMC, Deutsche Telekom, Lockheed Martin, Oracle, IBM and eBay's cyber security unit.

The site is connected to Tel Aviv by high speed rail, allowing for a quick 60 mile commute.

The Israelis forecast that an additional 15-20 office buildings will be built in the next decade, bring total employment to 10,000.

I'm always happy to hear stories of success.

If I'm not mistaken, Israel has the highest number of STEM professionals per capita in the world. IBM, Motorola, and Intel have been over there forever, with good reason given how many innovations they've developed over the years.

People seem to forget that Israel has a huge percentage of Arabs, both Muslim and non-Muslim (I think mostly Christian otherwise). Either way I think this is a good thing for Israel if it can be used for peaceful/"good for humanity" and protective/defensive purposes. Employing thousands like that is always a plus, especially since the population all over the world continues to grow at such a striking rate.
