RE: Some Bham City Councilors Want to Revisit UAB Football Pledge
These are the council members that were not present at the vote. Choosing now to raise this as an issue just gives credibility to Watts' claim that the city does not stand behind its word(even though Tyson has been against it from the start). I'm surprised at Roberson, though. As a (former?) asst AD a Samford you'd think he'd understand how athletics, specifically football, is important the the university and the community. Perhaps, though, its just political positioning. That being said I'd be shocked if the decision was reversed...

It's just political positioning, nothing more than that.

Not really. I was pleasantly surprised that this group of idiots were able to compose themselves long enough to formulate an oppositional stance against Watts and in support of football. Now that they feel that the battle is over, they are ready to abandon any hard work or difficult commitments associated with it. Just like they do in the management of the city.

You don't want idiots supporting the program so it's probably best they pull the yearly $250,000 those damn idiots already give UAB right? Right!!!

Couldn't they at least give us a week or so before the bad news starts rolling in?

It's two out of nine. They say their piece, but have never actually voted against it, so they get to have it both ways.

We don't need any more ammo for the Watts/anti-football crowd. Between this and Ingram waffling on whether or not they're going to do right by Coach Clark, I'm afraid the empire is getting ready to strike back, so to speak.

They want some deep pocketed, anti UAB person to line their pockets. The Birmingham government shake down tactics will never change.

RE: Some Bham City Councilors Want to Revisit UAB Football Pledge
Just a word of warning for you guys - when ETSU's president dropped football in 2003, he came back in 2007 and said they "made a mistake" and wanted to revive the program, on the condition that $400,000 could be raised in 3 months (we did it in 6 weeks), AND the student body voted for a fee increase.
They took a preliminary vote which was overwhelmingly in favor, but that set the stage for lobbying by the anti-football crowd over the ensuing 3-4 months and gave them time to rally the students against it. The final vote to increase fees failed 60-40%, and gave the same president an excuse not to bring it back. That became a scapegoat not to bring it back, and took the heat off of him somewhat with the more neutral onlookers.
Be careful Watts doesn't do that here, too. Interesting side note, both of these guys are physicians, for whatever that's worth.

I hope these two council members didn't get paid for that meeting that they missed. If there was a quorum present for the vote, tough shitski.

If Rafferty would just allow Uber, we could impose a 1% tax and have a stadium in two years.

As much as I dislike uber for their unethical practices, this is a solid idea!
