Jimmy Filler: Stadium Probably 3-5 Years Away
From Ken Lass:
"UAB football supporter and donor Jimmy Filler says new stadium is probably 3 to 5 yrs away. Bham mayor says city has no money for it."

Bell wants UAB to the be a the main tenant in the Dome. It's understandable that the city wouldn't help UAB with an on-campus stadium. Not their job. There are some Blazer fans who think a dome would be better for UAB football in the long run, and there are some valid reasons why. This is going to take some smart people to figure out the best course of action.

The best course of action is UAB getting an OCS paid for by UAB. Orlando refurbished the Citrus Bowl yet UCF still thought it necessary to build an OCS. If 3-5 years is the time frame that could happen, I would be extremely ecstatic!!!

I can live with that. As long as there is a plan that is put into action so the stadium will be ready in 3-5 years. Some real concrete commitments.
Just bought a house so I can't help financially to amount to anything, but I will sign up to come help carry bags of concrete and to clean up the job site on the weekends. Or as my title suggests, pass out water bottles to the construction crew.

From what I have seen reported about what FBHC Clark's priority lists, there are several items he wants before the OCS gets to the top. The extent to which the OCS might be combined with other items may move it higher. Right now, UAB is so far behind even state high schools in facilities that we won't be taken seriously by recruits until we build some of them right away. No one can train or condition in facilities that are only planned for some future time. Shovels need to meet soil ASAP.

If it got the go ahead today it would probably take three years.

You are exactly right. "Shovels need to meet soil, ASAP." That goes for practice facilities and and an on campus stadium.

3-5 years away on a normal project schedule would mean they should be announcing plans for it in the next year. I'm assuming he means the beginning of the project, including announcing it, is 3-5 years away.

"The coaches' office looked like a dentist's office," Filler said. "It was terrible. UAB football never really had a chance. A lot of coaches came here and tried their best but they couldn't get the university ever to commit to any upgrade to the facilities. We have antiquated Legion Field, which we still have to go back to the next 2 to 3 years until we have a new place to play UAB football. Hopefully it will be an on-campus stadium."

When there's a stadium fund for it to go into.

Then they need to be issuing bonds today. If this is going to be on UAB property it will have to go before the board, even if not a penny of money comes from a UAB account. I would love to see it that soon, but even if they had a concrete plan in hand right now that timeline is pretty tight.
