what do you think?
If someon smokes a lo of cigarettes daily and gets lung cancer, if someone drinks a 1/5th of liquor a day and has liver damage, if someone eats yons of sugar/carbs and gets diabetes, if someone eats 5000 calories a day and high cholesterol diet and has a heart attack, should we all have to pay money for medical bills?

I think we should establish colonies, something like what they used to do for lepers, we should take all the those folks you mention(smokers with lung cancer, alcoholics with liver disease, fat people with heart disease, etc) and just put them in one of these colonies and let them die.

If you exceed the speed limit, or if you don't buy the absolute safest car on the road, how is that any different?
Or, if you choose to live in an urban area with some level of air pollution?
Should only the most genetically fit reproduce so their kids are likely healthier and less of a burden on the medical system?
Slippery slope.

what is that magic number of 'too much', and moderation? are you qualified to tell us?
i don't know if the question is 'should we have to pay money for medical bills.' but rather, what the heck became of us that we cannot have a little empathy for our neighbors?

Which then keeps you from collecting Social Security and draining down Medicare, right?

Anyone who dies early pays into SS and Medicare but doesn't draw out. Positive for those who make it to retirement age. More funds, less people...

If they have age eligible dependents they would get survivor income but only until they reach adulthood.
Greece is defaulting on debt because of all the drachmas they blew on constructing Olympic facilities that they never used again. The only nation's that are bidding for the upcoming games are facist China and Kazakhstan. You won't see democracies pursue the Olympics, unless Olympic committees allow London, Vancouver, Toronto or Sydney to host them with facilities they already have in place.

RE: what do you think?
Those who pursue unhealthy life style choices will most likely die earlier than normal and then cease to be a cost to society. Their life insurance policies will also be much more costly which would be a significant inducement for them to change their choices.
Many diabetics are afflicted with the Juvenile form of the disease, should we add insult to the horrible news of being afflicted with the disease from a young age.
Smokers and drinkers also pay enormous federal, state and local taxes on their purchases

But taxes on cigarettes and booze do not go to medical. They go into general slush fund

RE: what do you think?
Let's extend this further. People who run and bang up their knees. People who exercise and pull a muscle or damage a vertebra. People who play sports and destroy their bodies. People who drive a car and cause or get into an accident, causing damage to themselves and others. People climbing mountains, scaling a wall, and jumping out of a plane bang themselves up. The list is endless. It is all their choice to do these things. No one forced them to do any of these activities.

The solution is clearly:
But then you'd get ass-rash and how would we pay for all the ass-rash treatments? There is truly no winning. We should all commit Seppuku and die, leaving the planet to be lead by husky dogs.

Well, this would make the "death panel" scare look like child's play. haha
A more realistic solution would be an increased emphasis on need-based retirement and healthcare support.

Well....I need to retire (so I've been told). I also need healthcare support (and lots of it). Where do I sign up?
P.S. Hopefully, it's not far from the place where I can get my free cell phone.

I always knew the Huskies would win out and take over the planet. It's simply survival of the fittest!
