When I got my Memphis Magazine a few days ago, the cover really caught my attention. K2 the story you linked, while a good one, is not the cover story which was much more extensive. It probably won't show up on the free website for awhile.

RE: Article in this month's Memphis Magazine
When it comes to this city, the only difference between the times the Tigers have been big time and the last few Grizz seasons is the Grizz attract the hipster crowd. And that's a rather large crowd, I must say. When Cal was making his run here, the magazines and articles were saying the same things as they're saying about the Grizz now. Bringing the city together. Making race irrelevant. Etc. etc. I love the Tigers and the Grizz, but the Grizz arent doing anything now that the Tigers have not done to this city time after time. Well, except attract a legion of hipsters.

I'm not sure how you define hipsters, but the Grizz have definitely become the hometown team for the 25-40 year old crowd that has money to burn on entertainment. That poses significant future fundraising and ticket sale problems for Tiger athletics.

It's easier to get a Grizz ticket than it is a tiger ticket for a newcomer. You don't have to make a donation a year in advance. They have packs where you can pick and choose. Two different entities.

I thought the 55 and older demographic was the strongest Grizz supporting segment.

And the same age demographics were Tiger homers not too long ago. It's whoever wins. Whoever wins...draws.

When the Grizz fall off, as will support, attendance, care, etc. This is a cycle weve seen the Tigers go through for 40 years. The Grizz aren't doing anything the Tigers have not done. BUT, I think you know all of this already 07-coffee3

Btw, can you think of something the Grizz are doing that the Tigers have not? I don't think you can..

When or IF.....

I'll get back to you

You seem defensive. Nowhere did I say in the OP that the Tigers are second class citizens.

But I understand how you can feel that way.

Buy the Memphis Magazine, read the article, then circle back. Nobody forces you to post in the Grindhouse Forum. You choose to do that yourself.

Whatevs, brah. This is a Tiger town. Always has been, and always will be. Grizz are just a phase. We've seen many pro phases. Only the Tigers have lasted. TrEuTh.

What other pro team of a big time sport has stuck around for a decade in Memphis? This Grizz experience is unlike any other pro team has had in memphis, so not sure who you are comparing to. Grizz are here for the long haul and is the team to root for for a legion of young fans.

No doubt the Grizz are here for the long haul, but you can't deny that there is probably a rough stretch coming up soon. And if the Tigers bounce back during that Grizz rough time, then the Tigers will be the team the youngsters support.

It's possible but we won't know until that happens. Regardless you mentioned similar things have happened with other pro teams and they have come and gone. The Grizz are different compared to that and are now doing what the Tigers did decades ago in building a generation of Grizz fans.

RE: Article in this month's Memphis Magazine
Memphis has never had a major league franchise, so the comparison is extremely weak at best. The Grizz had a rough first 8 or so years, but the franchise finally embraced the city and the city returned the favor. The Grizz are ingrained into the culture of this city, and that extends beyond just winning basketball games.

When I grew up, the legends of Memphis hoops were Finch, Lee and Hardaway. Now it is ZBo and TA. Gasol is all-NBA for goodness sake. After his Game 2 performance, Conley is starting to make his own case. I'm fairly certain this front office knows that Gasol and Conley are the future of this team, and they will build it accordingly to avoid that drop off many are expecting. It's going to sting, but TA and Zbo likely won't be here forever.
