You didn't have too. Just have had an agreement with Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Kuwait to allow a long term military base nearby to control tensions in the area. those were not in place and Saddam ran a muck killing His own People that rose up against him after the Gulf Pull out and Gave the illusion the U.S. only went in for the oil giving rise to Osama Bin Laden and Company. There was No U.S. presence to show the Arab World We cared about anything but the Oil fields while We bragged How great Our economy was while They Burned .

I've always found it a surprising, rather than serendipitous, coincidence that Muammar Gadaffyduck agreed to surrender his nuclear program to W, just a week after US forces pulled Saddam out of a rat hole.

But then, one probably had nothing to do with the other. Yep, that's it.
