But instead, when Watts was using the whole "we don't know what will happen with conference affiliation", Banowksy laid it out in no uncertain terms. Option 1, don't bring back football and be expelled or option 2, bring back football and use this as a galvanizing event to launch UAB into a new era of greater success to benefit the school and CUSA.

That is leadership. It was very clear UAB is a critical member of CUSA. Not only do they have one of the best basketball pedigrees, they also reside in one of the top football crazed markets in the country. Having UAB back in the fold is a huge deal for CUSA's future.

+1 Nailed it....

Agree totally he played it perfectly with the UAB situation.

I know I'm a little late in this, but I'm so glad UAB brought back football. My hats off to everyone involved in making it happen and putting so much pressure on Watts so that the decision was almost unavoidable. Congrats, UAB!

I'm not a BB hater like some on this board, and frankly I think he's doing a pretty good job.

That said, calling this genius is a bit much no? Though there was no blue print for this I don't think it took a genius to figure out how to play this one.

And frankly it was the UAB students, alumni, and fans who ultimately rose to the occasion to make this happen not anyone in the league office. Though I am thankful BB didn't rush out to find a replacement. I was very worried we would add just for the sake of adding, which would have been the wrong decision.

He has done mostly everything right. My only gripe with him is bringing in too many schools too quickly. I know we were in survival mode but for the most part it was easy to replace most teams: Memphis-MTSU, Tulane-LT, Houston-UTSA, SMU-NT, and UCF-FAU. I'll never understand why FIU was brought on. Then that caused us to have to bring on Charlotte because of the odd number. My best guess is that Charlotte won't win a conference game for at least two seasons and FIU will continue to win one to 4 games for the foreseeable future.

Both have the ability to be great but Charlotte is years away (maybe decades), and FIU leadership has shown nothing but ineptitude which has held them back other than the TY Hilton days.

FIU was here before FAU and at the time FIU was coming off back to back bowl games when they got the invite. Also at that time Marshall had 2 winning seasons out of 8. So there's no reason FIU can't get back to 7 or 8 wins

I wouldn't call it "genius" but it was smart. You leave the door open just in case this happens, because hey -- UAB is a founding member and have contributed a lot in years past. Now they are coming back, and you have the system in place to make sure they can do so effectively.

I agree.

So, why haven't the member schools agreed to expand to 16 with Arkansas State and Louisiana, like he suggested a couple of years ago?

Because the conference presidents overwhelmingly rejected further expansion roughly 18 months ago. Nothing has apparently changed their opinions since then.

Banowsky did a great job handling the uab situation. Overall it is too early to determine how successful his tenure has been. Was going to 14 the correct decision and did they select the correct teams in expansion? Those are the two big issues. Maybe he did, but that will be much clearer in 2-4 years. CUSA performed very well in 2014, so things look good early on.

Because 16 is too many. Im sure he would love more newer schools. Those are the ones who actually think he is a good commish. Those of us who have been here longer see him differently.

Been with CUSA as long as you and think he has done a good job considering the events

He brought this up at Winter meetings in 2014 and did not get enough support from the presidents to move forward on the idea.
