RE: Can UAB Meet FBS Requirements?
Some of you may not be aware of it, but Birmingham was awarded to 2021 World Games. Birmingham's mayor has already indicated Legion Field will be one of the facilities used for the games and that money will be used to spruce it up. So it's a pretty sure bet there will be no new stadium built until after those games are held.

UAB from what I understand also wanted to fix Legion Field some years ago after they were shot down for a new stadium. Could the city sell the stadium to UAB in the future? It would be like VCU going after a 15,000 city stadium in Richmond.

The NCAA granted all sorts of help the University of New Orleans and Tulane in the wake of Katrina because neither could afford to sponsor a sufficient number of sports.

Neither was forced to reclassify until they got back up. UAB goes to the Board of Directors, says it was a financial emergency that caused us to drop the three sports, the community has resolved the issue.

NCAA more likely than not (I know people think only evil of the NCAA, they may be nonsensical but rarely evil) restores UAB fully and gives the program a deadline to get back into full compliance.

THE ABSOLUTE WORST LIKELY OUTCOME?

The NCAA says you can play FBS in 2016, if you fail to comply with every rule, (and meeting scholarships is unlikely) you will be given a letter warning. The letter warning says don't break any of these standards for the next 10 years or you will be reclassified.

If UAB plays club ball or FCS in 2016 it will be because UAB made the decision to try to be more competitive.
UAB was self-imposed. The other two were natural disasters.

The stadium still hosts the Magic City Classic (Alabama A&M vs Alabama State) and the Birmingham (formerly PapaJohns.com and BBVA Compass) Bowl, both of which need a larger venue that what UAB would build for an on campus stadium.

If Legion Field goes away, the Birmingham Bowl would likely alternate between Tuscaloosa and Auburn, either alternating or dovetailing the AHSAA Super 7, which already alternates between Bryant-Denny and Jordan-Hare. The Magic City Classic would be a bigger problem as there is no other stadium outside Tuscaloosa or Auburn big enough to accommodate a crowd that frequently reaches 60,000. Both ASU and AAMU could try to make it a premium ticket at their stadiums, but it's a big drop from 70,000 to 25,000 seats.

There's also the possibility that UAB has a major non-conference home game at some point in the future and needs more seats than an on-campus stadium would provide. Some P5 schools are willing to play G6 opponents in Alabama just to partake in the recruiting grounds.

The city of Birmingham is going to have to put some money into Legion Field, and possibly the neighborhood around it. Adding some suites might be a good trial balloon for funding an on-campus stadium at UAB.

The logical size for an eventual on campus stadium would be around 40k. You could pretty easily add 10k with temporary end zone seats. Although getting to 60k would be difficult.

But both temporary financial crisis.

Positively yes. That decision is final.

I believe so. Time will tell.

True. UAB football has a very steep and treacherous mountain to climb. I think the difficulties are being minimized or ignored in the (understandable) euphoria of the moment. That will last until they actually start playing football games again.

UAB has never wanted to fix Legion Field (except for general repairs) nor would they ever want to purchase it.

UAB buying Legion Field was never an option now I do know that there were repairs that UAB requested that the city drug its feet on. I seriously doubt that the city would sell Legion Field for several reasons. Truth be told UAB should have their own stadium and nobody has put forth a legit argument on why they shouldn’t.
