RE: UCONN-UCF rivalry
TL;DR

I remember when UCF was being looked at for the Big East and Calhoun stated we weren't 'sexy' enough for them.

Love this pie to the face.

I don't really know that it is a pie to the face. It isn't that UCF has gotten that much more "sexy" in the eyes of the UConn administration as much as UConn has no more natural rivals due to conference realignment not working out for them. UCF is a fine pick when looking at available AAC schools. UCF now has proven worth. They beat the Big 12 champ in the Fiesta Bowl two seasons ago. That was impressive. Like everything else, though, that was two years ago and a new season is starting this year. No school is superior to any other school until the final conference standings come out at the end of a year. That is why they play the game.

Even with UCF being better in football at the moment (the money sport), I would argue that UConn's overall athletic department still makes UConn a sexier name, though (which is why I say that it isn't a total pie to the face). Calhoun's statement wasn't totally out of line at that time (especially when viewed through his basketball centric viewpoint). However, UCF football has proven Calhoun wrong now as to their worth to this conference. Calhoun didn't have a crystal ball to see the future. UCF is a worthy conference mate and I believe that UConn, Cincy, UCF, and Memphis will all find a P5 home in the long run.

I'm curious to hear from Florida residents about the USF-UCF rivalry. When did it first become an idea (before, during, or after the four game series in the mid-atlantic 2000's)? Where do you see the rivalry going now that you're in the same conference?

no...not really and i don't think either fan base really cares either

I thought it was BC that didn't like a UCF invite, particularly when the Big East was considering a football/hoops split for the 2005 season. Not positive about that, and it's been a long time since I read the minutes from those meetings.

Then, the conference stayed together and BC got the ACC invite, and the Big East invited USF instead of UCF.

I think that comment was generally made about any expansion member years ago. We would say the same thing about teams wanting to join the aac today outside of BYU.

It is incredibly tacky for UConn to omit your 2013 win, and to make a rivalry trophy without UCF involvement.

The 2013 win was omitted because the trophy was created after the 2014 season. Why should Diaco have to "backdate" the thing to a time that occurred before he created this idiotic rivalry in his head?

The only rival that was ever natural for UConn was Rutgers. That one was getting good. That is just one additional reason why I hope that UConn ends up in the B1G.

Exactly, it was created after the season, so it already is backdated. Either included both of the two previous years as conference partners or take the UConn victory off and start from the creation of the trophy.

UCF, just win the next game and put both your wins on the trophy.

Indeed. And UCF has come light years since then. Of any school in the AAC, I still think that UCF is the one with the most athletic upside looking toward the future. They have shown a huge commitment to athletics and academics and are emerging as a major player on the national stage.

Does this trophy reside at UConn or is the pic from Bob Diaco's man cave? hahahaha

I think that's right --- in fact, it looks like the only real 'fan rivalry' in this conference is UCF - USF.

RE: UCONN-UCF rivalry
It they want to make rivalry trophies then I can see one for:
1. Memphis and Cinci.... theres enough history in different sports to support this and they dont really like each other.
2. Houston and Tulsa... again, enough history.
3. Houston and SMU
4. USF and UCF - this one just begs of a trophy. Plenty of hate. The history isnt as long but its already way intense.

If UCF wins this year, will the trophy go in a closet at UCONN or at UCF?

RE: UCONN-UCF rivalry
This was my basic idea for the USF/UCF War on I4 rivalry trophy. I included both mascots, I4, the road sign and then on the base of the trophy hwy signs pointing east and west.
It definitely needs a professionals tweaking but I think it would be a good start.

RE: UCONN-UCF rivalry
This could be an interesting rivalry if:
- UCF actually agrees to also acknowledge it
- A real name is created for the rivalry
- A real trophy is created for it (and the trophy also includes UCF's win, since if both sides agree to it, then the trophy should reflect all wins of both sides)

It actually probably would develop for both sides as UConn gets back to being a respectable team on the field. However, if it is going to be a manufactured rivalry and not an organic one, it needs to have a slick name and a cool trophy

Works well with the UConn trophy. Side by side in UCF's trophy case.

...and commenting on the Cincinnati-Memphis rivalry comment; I don't see a single program in this conference that I'd consider a rival. I absolutely like the conference and the universities that make up the conference, however there isn't one single program that I can say gets me super/edge of my seat excited. Rivalries develop naturally, they aren't manufactured in someone's head and commanded "to be".

I believe Cincy and Memphis were also together in the Missouri Valley Conference.

I agree with you as far as it not being much of a rivalry. In a way you would think it would be more than it is given the 5 different conferences we've shared--actually that sounds like some sort of record, lol.

I do think though that for Memphis fans, playing a bball game against Cincy has more interest than playing, say, against Temple, most likely because Memphis-Cincy had some epic battles years ago in games that actually meant something in terms of seeding, tourney invites, etc, and watching the Huggins-Calipari show was always entertaining.

Agreed, it should stir more vibes in the soul than it does. The Finch/Huggins battles were the BB games that come to my mind first. 4th and 27 is the Bearcat moment that really stand out to me; but through it all, I can't get as worked up about the Bearcats as I have the Cards in the past. I think that's part of the problem, Tigers/Bearcats both let the Cards get in their heads more than they should. I just don't see a rivalry in this conference coming close to Louisville. But, that's just my opinion and I won't argue with anyone who feels differently.
