Student Sports Apathy
There is such a huge disconnect between Eastern students and the
two major sports that I was hoping there would be more creativity
by the athletic administration to narrow the gap. Football is still an
unknown but basketball deserves better attendance. You would never
realize the popularity of basketball in black culture if your only
exposure was attending an Eastern game. There is a black student
community at EMU and are potential supporters that need to be
marketed to. These students are also members of the selfie, American
Idol, Facebook, look at me generation. In Youtube if you search the
phrase "Eastern Michigan Stroll" there are videos of choreographed
dance competitions that appear to be between black fraternities and
sororities. Why couldn't this competition be during half time at the
basketball games instead of throwing cheap t-shirts into the crowd.

I would encourage folks to send marketing ideas to Tony Orlando. Here's his info: http://emueagles.com/mobile/staff.aspx?staff=275

RE: Student Sports Apathy
As have been mentioned on this forum, EMU tries to 'reach' incoming new students during the Labor Day weekend with orientation and the football game.

I would add that there are student groups who do tailgates, T-shirts, etc. I'm sure they would welcome any and all students to join them.

I've mentioned to a member of the EaglesNest (the student section in the south end of the Convo) that I'm willing to contribute some of my money or try 'crowd funding' to raise some good bucks to buy shirts for them.

After all, free tickets, tailgating, free T-shirts, etc. Sounds good to me. When I was at EMU we didn't have tailgating or T-shirts.
