Thanks for this thread!

I am elated that UAB is peers with a school like Rice, instead of what could have been the alternative.

To continue our shared vision in CUSA was really elementary my Dear Watson.

How are Rice and UAB peer schools? This is an honest question - not a better-than-you statement. Both schools have different goals, different applicant bases and different powers that be that pull the strings.

They're in the same conference, so they're peers, in that sense at least. Things are what they are.

I'm happy for them, and I sincerely hope the conference just keeps things as status quo (playing one year with one less football member). It will be tough for them to be competitive right out of the bat in 2016, assuming they being play again that season. It's sort of like what SMU faced in 1989.

Great news- and I hope the University in Birmingham can finally start to step out of the shadows/tentacles of UAT as a result of this crazy episode.

Welcome back Blazers!

It's great news because it means some stability for the conference, which is what we need for now.

The whole episode had some positives. It helped serve notice to other middle-to-bottom-of-the-pack teams that it was put up or shut up time. I would expect it helped light a fire under the backsides of several programs that were previously content (or not heavily bothered) to just be in D1.

Was a Jack Welch moment. When the bottom gets pruned every so often, it keeps people on its toes. UAB in the long run might be better off, and IMO, the rest of C-USA definitely is.

Strange. I thought all their players transferred?

Not all. It's going to be a rebuilding process.

On a trivial point, for those that stay, does this count as a redshirt season for eligibility, or does it not count as service time (to steal a term from the pros)? I hope the latter, though staying at school for 6 years (if they've already had a redshirt season) for 4 seasons of football could be an interesting budget challenge.

Some say there are 25-30 still there.

I'm pretty sure that UAB is also the second best academic school in the conference by many measures.

One benefit of UAB's decision to reinstate football, is that ICB has resuscitated his excellent Blazernation website ... and he told me that his popular football and basketball Pick'em contests will return this fall.
