EMU claims two top MAC awards
Eastern Michigan was awarded the Cartwright Award for overall athletic excellence and the Jacoby Trophy for the top women's athletic program at the MAC Awards banquet Wednesday night.
Central Michigan took home the Reese Trophy for the top men's athletic program.

Where are the standings for those awards? Just curious if we're at the bottom again.

Did they also win the award for most unused/sold corporate tickets for football games?

per Jon Steinbrecher, "We have heard the message board cries over the turnstile injustice that is playing out at EMU and we have decided to revoke the Cartwright Award. victories are born in the stands, not on the playing field."

RE: EMU claims two top MAC awards
I am not sure the criteria for these awards is exactly fair in reference to the Reese and Jacoby trophy. I believe you get a point total for your finish and then it is divided by the amount of sports that your have for a final point total. This punishes schools for having more sports and giving more student-athletes opportunities to compete at the Division I level. I know CMU won on the men's side, but they only offer seven men's sports, while UB offers 10. So UB and CMU could both have 3-4 teams finish at the top of the standings, but CMU only has to worry about three other teams, while UB has to worry about six.
With this criteria, it seems nearly impossible for UB to win this award without cutting sports.

Looking at it another way, UB has more opportunities to make up for a weaker team by having it mean less in the overall average. A team with fewer sports has a harder time making up for one or two poorer teams. A fan of that school could then ***** that the system is unfairly weighted towards schools that have more sports that can mitigate a bad team's points in the final average.
Yes I agree with that. I guess in UB's case, there are several sports which are severely underfunded and I believe have no chance really ever competing, in those cases it is better to not have them if you are fighting for these overall titles.

I think EMU would go 0-2 if victories could be born on either. However, I will say -- never count a new football coach out. This year or the next will determine whether their new coach can make EMU rise up and cause some issues in the MAC.

RE: EMU claims two top MAC awards
I believe that makes it two years in a row for the Cartwright Award for EMU. If I'm not mistaken (and I could be) is that EMU offers more total sports programs than any other MAC school.
As EMU Steve pointed out, EMU athletics performance wise on the field and academic wise is on a upward rebound. Its good to see recognition of that fact.
Steve also pointed out that the football program is the dark cloud and prism that others outside of EMU use to judge the entire athletic program. EMU women hoops had a great season under adverse circumstances and are poised next year to move up. Men's hoops had two back to back 20 games seasons I not sure they move up next year or continue that streak but the program has rebounded under Murphy.
Football is the leak in the dam that needs to be fixed.

EDIT: '79, I think one Cartwright and one Jacoby. Jacoby is the one where the results are tallied based on actual standings in sports for a particular gender.
Whenever EMU FB hits 6 - 6, I will consider EMU athletics on par with virtually any program in the MAC.
We can debate the 'weights' to give individual sports, but women's sports are an undeniable EMU strength now (and the future looks good in hoops, T&F, etc.).
Even EMU men's hoops had decent MAC tourney runs the last two seasons... and we continue to be strong in the men's Olympics (except baseball which hit a bad patch).
As '79 indicated, we are ONE sport, the marque sport, FB, from being solid across the board, both genders. Nothing to be ashamed of here...

RE: EMU claims two top MAC awards
Does anybody know the exact method for determining the Jacoby and Reese Trophies? Are regular season championships and conference tournament titles counted separately?
It just seems weird to me that a program (Ohio) can have two regular season titles (volleyball and women's basketball) and one tournament championship (basketball) yet sit in tenth of twelve teams.

The best I've found is an old wikipedia article that showed the breakdown from '09-'10: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009%E2%80%...se_Trophy. I doubt it would have changed much. Each sport is assigned a point value and then you divide it by the number of sports you competed in.
