Bobcats Show Improvement In NCAA APR Report

SAN MARCOS, Texas – With all 16 sports ranking well above the NCAA minimum standards, the Texas State Athletics Department demonstrated tremendous improvement in the latest NCAA Division I Academic Report (APR) that was released on Wednesday.

Last week, the women's tennis team earned their seventh consecutive NCAA Public Recognition Award after earning a perfect score each year. The women's golf team also was Publicly Recognized by the NCAA after earning a perfect score of 1,000 for the third straight year.

Along with those two teams ranking among the top 10 teams nationally, the Bobcat football, men's indoor track and field, men's outdoor track and field, women's soccer and softball teams had one of the top four scores among Sun Belt Conference teams in each of their sports.

Seven Texas State teams achieved their highest scores ever with tennis and women's golf posting perfect scores, and football earning a score of 958. In addition, the men's and women's indoor and outdoor teams posted their highest scores with the men's indoor team having a score of 978, men's outdoor team recording a score of 980, women's indoor team having 980 and the women's outdoor team recording a score of 977.

The men's golf team (980), women's cross country (985) and volleyball (957) improved their scores from last year's previous four-year period, while the women's golf, tennis, soccer and women's indoor track and field teams equaled their scores from last year.

Finally, besides all 16 teams exceeding the minimum score of 930, Texas State also had seven teams exceed the national average score in each of their sport with men's cross country, men's golf, men's indoor track and field, men's outdoor track and field, women's golf, soccer, tennis achieving the feat.

APR scores provide a real-time measurement of a team's classroom achievement by accounting for academic progress, retention and graduation rates over a four-year period. Today's NCAA report for all Division I athletic programs reflects the academic years from 2010-11 through 2013-14.

RE: SBC APR Scores
I think the Cajuns won an academic award at the conference baseball tournament but wasn't sure if it was just for baseball or for all sports. We did have an article (below) reporting the school APR info.

Cajuns Continue To Thrive In Latest NCAA APR Release

LAFAYETTE – Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns student-athletes continued to thrive in the classroom as all 16 Division I varsity sports exceeded the required cutoff point of 930 as the annual Academic Progress Rate (APR) was released on Wednesday by the NCAA.

Twelve sports scored above a 960 on the multi-year average, with the men's cross country team honored by the NCAA as one of 11 athletic programs in the state of Louisiana and over 1,100 programs nationally to record a perfect 1,000. Men's cross country and women's tennis, which scored a 992 average for the second consecutive year, each tied for the best multi-year average among schools in the state of Louisiana.

Women's cross country (991), women's indoor track and field (982), women's outdoor track and field (982), softball (980), women's soccer (979), men's tennis (978), men's golf (967), volleyball (966), baseball (965) and men's outdoor track and field (962) all exceeded the 960 mark.

"We are extremely proud of the many outstanding accomplishments of our student-athletes, both on the field and in the classroom," Director of Athletics Scott Farmer said. "This is a testament to the tremendous job that our coaches have done in recruiting outstanding student-athletes, and the work of our academic staff in keeping them on their respective path towards earning a degree."

Every Division I sports team calculates its APR each academic year, based on the eligibility and retention of each scholarship student-athlete. Teams scoring below certain thresholds can face sanctions, such as scholarship losses and restrictions on practice. Rates are based on the past four years' performance.

Similar to a report card, every Division I sports team calculates its APR each academic year. Scholarship student-athletes each semester earn one point for remaining eligible and one point for staying in school or graduating.

Rates are an average of the past four years' performance. National aggregates are based on all teams with usable data at the time of analysis. The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from 2010-11, 2011-2012, 2012-13 and 2013-14 academic years.

In order to compete in the 2015-16 postseason, teams must achieve a 930 multi-year APR. NCAA member campuses and conferences in Division I decided to move to the 930 standard because it predicts roughly a 50 percent graduation rate.

Louisiana Multi-Year APR Scores
Baseball – 965
Football – 953
Men's Basketball – 952

RE: SBC APR Scores
Thanks, we are pretty pleased. The single year football number is kind of concerning, but I gather that represents 2013 which had some turnover due to coaching change, so hopefully it will be trending upwards. FB posted the highest team GPA in 25 years this spring, so signs point to yes.

RE: SBC APR Scores
Here's a 5 year look at our FB APR's. Slow and steady progress. Losing guys (quit, grades, transfers) hurts but it can be overcome.

09/10 - 936
10/11 - 938
11/12 - 949
12/13 - 956
13/14 - 958

thanks to Saul on BCF.

RE: SBC APR Scores
Before I do the research, curious if anyone knows whether APR is based on anything other than grades. Do programs get more points if a kid gets an A in nuclear science, or does an A in Crayola Counting 101 count same as an A in quantum physics?

Note, I would be more likely to be in the crayon counting class. I had to take earth algebra to graduate. My skills are decidedly not in the hard sciences (if I indeed have any skills).

Maybe, but the important thing is not being best, but good enough. You get no points for being best. I may enjoy the ride to the NCAA Regionals better in an Escalade, but the Chrysler minivan gets me there just the same, but being at the regionals is what is important.

Academic standing in general. Does not take into account difficulty of coursework.

In other words, because ULM got higher APR in some sports then you'll just dismiss the meaning of it but when ULL gets higher APR...yeah, we get it. If your APR drops then you're not going to ANY post-season play (ULM's already been through that drama). This is not a chicken-or-egg scenario here.

Thanks. That's kinda what I figured, but wasn't certain. So in practice a school could steer athletes into easy courses and meet NCAA requirements ....
