Exclamation OT: UNLV observing UAB football outcome
UAB fans aren't the only ones eagerly awaiting to see whether university president Ray Watts reinstates football after shutting the sport down Dec. 2 of last year.

Las Vegas Journal-Review reports that small schools such as UNLV have an interest in Watts' decision because it has a tough time financially maintaining football. UNLV considered dropping football, but the hiring of football coach Tony Sanchez has reenergized interest in the sport, the website reports.

So if UAB brings football back, then that will show small FBS football programs like UNLV that they too should stick with the sport. If Watts sticks to his initial decision, maybe other schools will follow suit and drop football.

Watts is scheduled to make a decision by Monday.

While I agree with this idea, the difference is location. Alabama is a football state. Nevada isn't. I don't think there would be nearly as great an outrage if UNLV drops football as there was at UAB.

Agreed.

Plus, the other aspect of the UAB situation is that the decision was made by one person, acting under the influence/control of a committee whose first loyalty is not to UAB.

BTW, seems like Watts is going to make some sort of announcement within the hour (4-4:30 CDT)

That would make Nevada the single FBS program in the state. That's a huge boost for them.

I guess that explains why they were planning to build this.

It must also explain how they have some of the highest G5 resources. $44M+

Dropping football voluntarily would be one of the most idiotic things an FBS school could ever do. Dumb article is dumb.

I actually didn't foresee this much outrage from the UAB faithful. In fact, I expected very little. They've been quite the loud bunch....it's been an impressive fight.

Private developers were looking to build it.

Thing is there are amenities in cities that people want to know are present. Even if you don't use them. Knowing you COULD has some value.

Las Vegas is a very different animal from Birmingham. A lifelong Birmingham resident may rarely go to a UAB event but it is part of the fabric. A lifelong Las Vegas resident is a rare thing and likely identifies more with hoops anyway.

If UAB's demise had anything to do with money (as far as cost to UAB) this article would be valid. The only money this has to do with is how Alabama can get more of it while screwing everyone else in the state. If Nevada was forcing UNLV to desist playing football and lying about why, then they might have some common ground with UAB.

Bingo.

What's happening at UAB is no precedent. At least, you fellow non-flagships better hope not.

I think that UAB initially losing football will do the exact opposite to G5 football. A lot of programs on the back end are seeing what could actually happen if they don't get their act together. UNLV football leaving one of the largest cities without a professional sports team sounds crazy to me.

UNLV football is twice as old as UAB football, the school itself is also older and larger (at least currently) so they probably have more alumni and while UAB has proven to have a true diehard fanbase, let's not pretend like a good chunk of their alumni aren't Bama fans (just as we all have our own instate flagships to battle with amongst our own alumni) and while I've never been to Nevada or known a UNLV grad, I'd imagine they don't fight that battle, or at least not to the extent UAB does.
