Blog: UMass needs Naval support
As Navy gets ready to officially join the AAC here in a month , some bloggers need to take their shots. This guy suggests Navy should bolt and UMass should be ready to take their place.

What does membership in the American in football do for Navy?

With Army not a realistic partner in the future, with the chances for an American Conference team playing in a College Football Playoff bowl game because of the lateness of the annual Army-Navy game (a week after the pairings are announced) now in doubt, what is the attraction of the American for Navy.

Scheduling is not and will never be an issue for Navy, which will now be forced to play games each year against Tulsa, Houston, Memphis, Tulane and SMU from the American West, as well as three games from American East teams such as Cincinnati UConn, E. Carolina, Temple, UCF and South Florida.

Gladchuk merely needs to pick up the phone to find teams willing and eager to play Navy.
Bowl game guarantees? Win six games and Navy will play in a bowl game every season in places ranging from California to Texas to Florida.
Guaranteed money from a conference affiliation? Sorry, even as a partial partner in the American, that doesn’t work either for Navy. The American is not part of the Power 5 conferences, which each guarantee their members in excess of 20 million a year in revenues.

When Navy agreed to the deal a few years ago, there were expectations, if not guarantees about the membership. Lots of things have changed. The American looks more and more like a second tier conference with second tier teams playing just off Broadway.

Navy doesn’t need that.

So what happens if Navy does decide to bail out. The American will need a 12th team in football at the very least.

Waiting eagerly, ready to accept almost any deal is the University of Massachusetts, which now has a new administration that is trying to revive basketball and save football.

Navy WANTED to be in the AAC West just to play a few of those small private schools.

Yea, it sounds like it is the UMass administration. They are certainly planting a lot of stories.

A better plan for UMass would be to build a brand new stadium. And then beg Army to join the AAC and then try to be the tag along.

If Navy bolts, dismantle the AAC and merge with the best of the MWC that isn't Boise.

We don't need and don't want UMass. UMass needs AAC, not the other way around. Not sure why he keeps pushing this left and right. Navy isn't going anywhere. They spearheaded the effort to get rid of Boise, or at least make it fair for everyone.

He spent most of his reporting days in Boston. He mostly writes about BC, but its apparent he wants to see UMass matter more than it does. UMass needs the AAC to survive in FBS. Unfortunately, they represent nothing more than an anchor for the AAC to wear around its neck. UMass probably wont be in FBS in 5 years unless they get a conference to accept them or they put 100 million into their on-campus stadium. What the new administration at UMass needs to do is go back to the MAC, tell them they have had a change of heart, and hope the MAC has some interest in taking them back.

Don't understand why AJerseyGuy would blog about Navy. Navy will be fine. He must be running out of blogging material. That last article http://csnbbs.com/thread-736079.html was the first pro UMass article that I can remember. Of course he could not help himself with that back handed comment about BB. Our basketball has been fine after Lappas except for a few years as coaching and recruiting catch-up.

Here is a construction update on the new basketball practice facility.

FWIW, I do think football independence suits Navy just fine. He makes some good points in asking what does Navy really gain by being part of the AAC. I think for UConn, we're only here for scheduling in football. That's not meant as a slam, just that its honestly the only reason UConn is in this conference. Navy doesn't have problems with scheduling. I wonder if he is hearing things about Navy wavering on us.

No he is not and if UCONN leaves then the AAC is out of the northeast.

Exactly. Temple and Navy would become the northeastern most edges of the footprint.

All that he is hearing is the UMass administration asking him to 05-stirthepot.

What? So, the AAC chances of a NY6 bowl are in doubt because of the Army/Navy game.

Not normally. Just if Navy is our champ.
