Saban bama level playing field

Bwahahaha

He would play with 14 players, a nerf ball, tear away jerseys and 5 downs if he could get away with it

Come on man, stahp

Saban doesn't even want a level playing field when he is shaking hands after the game with other coaches. Heck they angle the camera to make him look taller. There are more slanted cameras in alabama than anywhere on earth

Bwhahahaha

Differences in COA will affect the G5 as well. App State for example is offering like $5,500 for COA. My school is only offering about half that. I'm not sure how App's COA is considered that much higher than ours, but somehow they got the formula to say that.

I didn't really have a problem with COA when I thought it would be a flat amount across the board, but with each school getting to offer different amounts, it is a terrible system.

Pretty sure they're throwing all sorts of expenses in their, including the janitors expenses and sick leave's.

Well, in theory there has to be some logic as to why it's higher at one place and lower at the other.

Initially I thought that urban / Northern / SoCal schools would have higher COA just due to cost of living, renting off campus, etc. Now it doesn't seem that way. In fact it seems to be the inverse of that. Maybe it's due to the costs associated with traveling back and forth home from a rural campus? Maybe there's stuff that varies significantly in what base tuition, books, etc covers?

I have no idea how they're coming up with these numbers but something about it stinks.

There are guidelines for establishing CoA set forth by the Dept of Ed. The financial aid offices on each campus use these guidelines to establish the CoA for each school. Technically there is federal oversight I just don't know how stringent it is. Further, this could lead to intra campus turmoil. Athletics will want the highest CoA possible now, but admissions/recruit do not. The publish these numbers for all interested parties and the higher that number the more "sticker" shock there could be and scare off would be enrollees.

I say screw the lot of them for not doing their due diligence and rushing this thing. Sleep in the bed you made.

A flat amount isn't equitable due to the large differences in cost of living between areas. For example, $5000 will go further in Memphis than in Hartford or Los Angeles.

Also some schools haven't 'readjusted' their COA for years. So called commuter schools had little reason for yearly readjustments --- plus some metro areas (not Memphis) have 'rent control.' Add those schools that don't suffer from 'sticker shock' that privates like Boston College indicated they were concerned about - are now more likely to adjust up as far as the guidelines allow.

I used to think a level playing field was a good idea, but then it rained and the water piled up. You really need a fair amount of slope on your playing field to help with drainage.

We are gonna start seeing the P5 eat their own. The idea some have that they are working some grand plan is silly. Greed rules all and you will see more of this going forward.

Dan Wolken ‏@DanWolken 6m6 minutes ago We can write articles every day about cost of attendance and the majority of people who pay attention to college sports still won't get it

Dan Wolken ‏@DanWolken 5m5 minutes ago For the millionth time, it was never a number intended for use by athletics. It's a financial aid formula. That's all.

Dan Wolken ‏@DanWolken 4m4 minutes ago
Dan Wolken retweeted Michael Castillo
It's not a farce. It's an estimate used for mom and dad to budget or for lenders to pay financial aid

Dan Wolken ‏@DanWolken 2m2 minutes ago And the reason we are in this "inequitable" spot is because college athletics couldn't get its act together so a judge did it for them

Vandy would stay a member of the SEC...because Bama can/does easily outspend Vandy in "under-the-table-money".

Bama would have to put on a "public" face/show on pretending to be upset about a scenario like the above...but behind closed doors, they would just laugh...as they dole out tens of thousands of $$$ to parents, neighborhood/family clergy, etc...that is done to secure commitments.

He wants a fair playing field when it benefits Ala. If all P5 schools gave stipend of 5k and G5 only 3k that would be fine. Don't see he arguing for cap on coaches salary, If the best players in country all lived in Minn I guarantee he would be for satellite camps.
