Texas leads the way with 4 regionals.
Hard to believe we've reached the point where none of the 4 is Rice or UT.
Times are changing in college baseball.

The only surprise is the 3rd Western Regional. That was clearly a stretch.

Santa Barbara and Lake Elsinore are 170 miles apart -- with the sprawl of LA in between. Seems a bit like Sam Houston bidding to host in Galveston (not that there's a ballpark in Galveston).

I have no idea where Rice will play next Friday.
Odd, not be hosting.
Of course, this could be another Oregon moment.

Probably also means there are going to be some surprise Western at large teams-- Nevada, Oregon, Cal, UC-I, Cal-St Northridge, Fresno State?

It appears our final RPI is going to be #33, which will probably make us the weakest #2 seed.

Lake Elsinore? Huh? Looks like a nice park on Google. But, what the hell does it have in common with UCSB other than being in the same state?

Certainly possible, but with 4 in-state brackets to fill, I still think TCU is more likely.

That is odd. It would appear that at least five California League franchises--Rancho Cucamonga (134 miles), Bakersfield (146), Inland Empire (150), High Desert (159), and Lancaster (Astros' farm, 126)--would be closer than Lake Elsinore, although none is really close. I thought maybe there might be a Phil Knight type connection, but owners Gary Jacobs and Len Simon don't seem to have any UCSB connection. The Lake Elsinore stadium is the largest of the five (7,866), and Bakersfield may be too small (2,700) and too old (1941), but the smallest of the other four (High Desert, 3,808) should be plenty big to host a regional, and all the others date from the 1990s or later. Looking at the schedule, High Desert and Inland Empire are home next weekend which eliminates them, but Lancaster (at Stockton and High Desert) and Bakersfield (at Visalia and Rancho Cucamonga) are on the road. I guess it would come down to Lancaster or Lake Elsinore. Maybe there was a good financial deal from Lake Elsinore.

Please, please, please send us to Lake Elsinore. The SoCal Rice people will come out in force, and UCSB will have virtually no support in that park.

Yeah, that's ridiculous. But it's only about 40 miles over the mountain from me (and not much farther for OCO). In the unlikely case of Owls playing in The Valley of the Dirt People, I'll definitely be there.

I'm not sure I'd say Lake Elsinore is greater LA (although to be honest I've never been there and it's been awhile since I actually lived in LA. But it kind of seems akin to say that Bryan-College Station is greater Houston.

The oddest thing about the regionals to me might be the lack of southeastern hosts (outside of the state of Florida). I guess there are still 3 SEC and 3 ACC hosts but it just seems strange not to see all the South Carolina/North Carolina hosts you normally see.

I'm a little late to the game here, but - to jump on the bandwagon here - Lake Elsinore is essentially a neutral site regional.

D1Baseball's final projection hypotheticals USC as the #2 there - they would probably outnumber UCSB in crowd support about 10-1 in that scenario.

I wonder if they'd send UT out west for the evening made-for-TV regional. You could conceivably put a CSF-USC-UT-Pepperdine regional with more national championships concentrated in one place than in a long, long time.

The UCSB announcement gives no clue as to why Lake Elsinore was chosen over some of the other minor league (or other capable) ball parks in the area.

The Gaucho Locos fan site has several active message threads that relate to hosting, though none gives any explanation:

> "We are hosting": http://ucsbgauchos.yuku.com/topic/19169/...WKrtdJVikp Wondering if Lake Elsinore might be more convenient to players' families, one poster tallied the distances to both UCSB and Lake Elsinore from the high schools of all the Gaucho players: "16 families are closer to Lake Elsinore and 21 have to travel further"

> "UCSB prepared to submit Regional host bid": http://ucsbgauchos.yuku.com/topic/19127/...WKwTNJViko

> "Patton article on CU and hosting": http://ucsbgauchos.yuku.com/topic/19162/...WKoSdJViko I like the poster who said Google maps had Lake Elsinore a 2.5-hour dirve without traffic ... and a 6-hour trip WITH traffic.

> "Lake Elsinore": http://ucsbgauchos.yuku.com/topic/19153/...WKymNJViko Talks about a Santa Barbara News-Press article (behind minor paywall) about the hosting bid. But quotes from Gaucho posters indicate there's little info beyond the UCSB announcement.
