Knee Replacement
Had it done yesterday, UGH! Painful, scary and simply brutal and graphic surgery. Even worse was the recovery from the Anesthesia, which gave me nausea, and the fact that nurses woke me up about every hour on the hour for vitals, blood draw and most disheartening a catheter03-lmfao.

The good news: I'm home now with the lovely and nurturing wife and the eager to help kid. As Bo Derek said on CBS Sunday Morning, "aging is not for sissies."

RE: Knee Replacement
BC, hang in there buddy. My golf partner had his surgery about six weeks ago and he is trying to get on the golf course already. He played five holes with us on Tuesday, and was hitting the ball as well as he ever did. He thought that he wouldn't be able to drive and guess what, he hit it off the tee, maybe not quite as far but as accurate as ever.

Good luck on the recovery, but I do have one question for you. You seem to be a little young to be having this done. Is it a result of sports injuries in a little younger life?

Keep your spirits up, I'm sure you are going to need it at times.

Always proud to be a Bronco, RTB.

Hope your recovery goes quickly and well, BC. Everyone I know who had that surgery has been very happy with it.

Thanks for the encouraging words, nice to hear about good outcomes. Years of playing basketball on cement courts in "Chuck Taylor's" will chew up your knees pretty badly.

Thanks BP, GOOD to know. I spent 24 hours whining to myself about electing to have the surgery, but the despair is mostly in the rear view mirror. So blessed to have a great wife. Makes all the difference during difficult times.

RE: Knee Replacement
Do the physical therapy diligently so you will have full or at least good range of motion.

It's painful but extremely worth it.

Yep, good advice. I am going to PT on Tuesday for the first time, but I've already started pre-PT exercises at home. So far, nearly pain free.

Congrats to your mom, takes a lot of moxie to have that done at 83! I doubt I'd do that. Thanks for the encouraging words, every note of support helps!

I read yesterday that the average age for this type of surgery is 70, but… I met A fellow patient who was 83. Good luck to your mom

RE: Knee Replacement
Good thread.

I've heard about Gary Stevens, a jockey in his early 50s, who had his surgery and is riding at the highest levels (2015 Kentucky Derby).

How does a replaced knee hold up on: recumbent bike? treadmill (brisk walking - say 15 minute miles)?

BTW, why the catheter? Wouldn't a bed pan work? BTW, a catheter isn't the end of the world, at least for a short time (days or a week or two).

BTW, blood thinners are very necessary for knee, ankle, etc. surgeries. Blood clots can be a real problem. (BTW, three years ago I had abdominal surgery and had to take blood thinners for 10 days. Developed GI bleeding and that can be serious. I went back to the ER with a '911' after I developed blood clots from the blood loss.)

These problems are relatively rare but 1 or 2 or 3 per 100 are still enough to be concerned about.

Serena Williams developed blood clots after a foot injury a few years ago...

Here's a tip that worked for me. Work with a hot therapist You'll work harder, and you won't notice the pain as much.

Lots of questions, few answers.

Couldn't pee. Sometimes the spinal block slows down your system, thus, catheter.

From what I've been told, both exercises should be fine, but a man made part is not as good as OEM made by God, so who knows?
