Official Rice/FIU CUSA tourney game thread
Rice is still one of the hottest teams in the country right now, we're on a roll so let's keep the momentum going this week!
The tourney starts today with a rematch against FIU
So, sing it with me now, to the tune of Xanadu:

A game
Resuming last weekends series
I'm sure that we'll be quite leery
We're playing FIU
I know
We swept 'em on Saturday
But don't forget last Thursday
Neither will FIU

Last year the Panthers were ranked pretty high in RPI
But now, it seems that they're just getting by, I don't know why

FIU,FIU
The postseason's here
Against FIU

Post season's here
Let's kick their rear
Poor FIU
Let's stand and cheer
And drink more beer
Beat FIU
FIU-U-Uuiuuuuuuuuuu..

RE: Official Rice/FIU CUSA tourney game thread
Need to get off to a good start in the tourney to build momentum and confidence for the post-season. Interesting first game matchup-- not only because we just played 3 games against FIU (so both teams are very familiar with each other), but also because the pitching matchup between staff aces (Jordan Stephens vs. So RHP Chris Mourelle) features two guys who struggled over the weekend. Jordan was adversely impact by the rain delay, and uncharacteristically struggled with his control, giving up 3 runs in the 3rd inning before getting pulled after a leadoff walk in the 4th. Muorelle, was hit hard in giving up 3 runs in the first inning on Saturday (all singles + error), but was pulled immediately after that one inning so as not to have the Rice lineup get too familiar with his stuff. Here's Mourelle's stats for the year:

14 starts, 6-7, 84.1 IP, 3.31 ERA, .250 BAA, 25 BBs, 42 Ks

...clearly, a soft-tossing right-hander, the type of pitcher who have frequently been kryptonite to our hitters, but a guy who averages just 0.5 strikeouts per IP. Hopefully, our guys make the adjustments and are prepared to go the opposite way against this guy (rather than trying to pull, and end up hitting ground ball after ground ball).

To refresh people's memories, here's my preview and scouting report from last weekend...

http://www.csnbbs.com/thread-737403.html

Will be interesting to see if the Byrdman comes out of the doghouse and sees action this week; particularly against left-handed pitching.

Let's continue our history of success playing in Hattiesburg and at The Pete, where I believe we have never lost a weekend series, and where we have won a couple conference championships. Let's get back on a roll in preparation for our upcoming post-season roadtrip. Just win, baby. Go Owls!

Walt noted on another thread that they pulled their ace after one inning against us Saturday in order to save him for today.
Let's greet him similarly today, hope he can stick around for just a couple more innings this time though 03-wink

Sorry, but I'd like to knock him out in the first in for real this time. I'm tired of wasting offensive opportunities early, letting teams hang around, and then imploding late in games. As we enter the post-season we need to develop a killer instinct and swagger; something we had the first month of the season, but lost along the way.

According to JD, Jordan is going to be limited to 60 pitches today; meaning he'll be out likely starter if we make it to Sunday's championship game. Hopefully he has his command so that he can give us at least 4 strong innings.

From what I've heard, Jon has decided not to pitch and lose his red shirt. He's healthy and will pitch in the Cape this Summer, but take it easy and get ready to be at full strength and form for Fall Ball.

4 up 3 down, Stephens gives up a hit but the score remains 0-0 going to the bottom of the 2nd.
