Apparently happened last night.

It's actually happened to multiple websites in the area.

Back bay brewings website was hacked by Iranian hackers the other day when I went on there.

It's more or less them using exploits in Wordpress CMS systems than it is a hack aimed at the Mace specifically. They will look at major universities, etc. I remember my old messageboard was hacked and it was because of an exploit in the software I was using -- meaning, I didn't update it in time and the hackers found a way to automatically get in and mess stuff up.

Yikes, I was Sports Editor of the M & C in the 1970's: didn't have that problem!

Pretty much. We used to war dial and look for exploits left unpatched and open all the time in high school. It's probably easier today with so many people running wordpress, joomla, etc and don't patch often.

They don't often target specific sites. They target sites built on WordPress using outdated plugins that are easy to exploit.

I think they are just attempting gain attention by stealing a platform's space, and getting media coverage. In cases like this the target and it's visibility probably doesn't matter so much; the attention is what they want. It's 1000 paper cuts type of terrorism.

Their mission was accomplished, you're talking about it.
