Banowsky on UAB's future
http://hamptonroads.com/2015/05/conferen...ll-thrive#
1. Sports would be eligible for C-USA titles next year.
2. Would forfeit $2.3 million in revenue and have to PAY the league to stay.
3. Banowsky thinks UAB football could thrive if brought back because America loves an underdog.

I didn't like the line about the school having to show CUSA a financial stability plan. That gives the Watzis inroads.

America's team! You're laughing, but I bet the BOT is actually concerned about the monster they've created.

Wow, that is a great read. The CUSA Commissioner "gets it"!

They should be.
I imagine every away crowd will taunt the Tide with "U-A-B" chants.

RE: Banowsky on UAB's future
Watts has been told the he made an error in cutting the program by everyone but the UA BOT Trustees. If we prove that money is no longer a problem, how does he justify not bringing Football back without being branded Dr. Evil by the media across the entire country?
If he makes the wrong decision under those circumstances I predict here and now that it will be the beginning of the end of both Watts and the BOT's dominance over UAB. The national media will flood Alabama with investigative reporters trying to dig out the real reason for Watts' decision and the truth will be revealed for everyone to see. Then the legislature will have no choice but to act decisively.
Take that as a warning Ray Watts - God help you make the right decision.

I took a threat of the legislature to get UAT & AU playing again after the pettiness that stopped it, so again it may take just that move

People keep saying things like this, and it never happens.

RE: Banowsky on UAB's future
How often has Alabama been told by someone in national media that its behavior is not good? And how often has its reaction been to correct that behavior and apologize for it? It is far more likely to dig in its heels and claim they are right to do what they want to do anyways and just label the critic as a LIBERAL who just doesn't understand "Alabama's conservative values".
I suspect that unless the pledge drive reaches a comfortable 8 digit number, Watts will hold fast to ending the three sports since that is what he was hired to do. He would much rather take his chances with an unhappy UAB "body politic" than an unhappy BOT since they pay his salary and support his authority.

However, the ice has been broken, and the gears have been greased. If the money is raised, and another report supports that football was/is/will be viable, and watts DOESN'T reinstate football, I do also predict that the national media will have a field-day with this story. THEN, it will have real teeth...

And if you read the Crimson comments from that 1948 period, you will find the same condescending attitude towards Auburn then that you have seen recently in the comments section of UAB stories. Some things never change - except to get worse.
The author of this piece only mentioned the BOT in a vague reference about a lack of support for the UAB program. That's putting it very kindly. People just have trouble comprehending that the "Old Guard" is willing to do so much damage to so many in order to keep things the way they were before 1969 when the tripartite university system was set up. Crimson is the only color they can think in.
