Baseball closes regular season 5/14-5/16
UTSA at Charlotte
Florida Atlantic at Western Kentucky
Marshall at Louisiana Tech
Southern Miss at Middle Tennessee State
FIU at Rice
Old Dominion at UAB

1 Rice 20 - 7
2 Middle Tennessee 19 - 8
3 Florida Atlantic 17 - 10
4 Southern Miss 16 - 10
5 UTSA 15 - 12
6 UAB 13 - 14
7 Old Dominion 12 - 15
7 FIU 12 - 15
9 Western Kentucky 10 - 17
9 Charlotte 10 - 17
9 Marshall 10 - 17
12 Louisiana Tech 7 - 19

I'm not going to try and figure out all the scenarios for each team, but if someone wants to take a shot at what their team needs to do this weekend to make the CUSA tournament or improve their seeding then go for it. I believe Tech is the only school that has been eliminated from the tournament, but the three teams tied for 9th would all need to win and get help to move into the top 8.

Southern Miss is sitting in 4th place and has a big series at 2nd place Middle Tennessee to finish the season. USM can still finish anywhere from 2nd to 5th depending on the outcome this weekend.
We have our normal rotation of Cody Carroll and Kirk McCarty scheduled for the first two games, but have not named a starter for game three which would usually be staff ace James McMahon. My guess is they're going to wait and see where they stand after the first two games before deciding whether to start McMahon Saturday or hold him out so he can start game one of the tournament.

Disappointing end to our season.....Not sure about our coach for baseball, have been on a downward spiral now for 2 or 3 seasons...

Surprised they are not throwing him Friday. He would still be ready to go for Game 1 in the conference tournament on Wed.

Smart move by the USM coaches. They believe that we must win the tournament to get to a regional.

ODU needs a series win. Not a lot of room for error.

I could be wrong about this but I think they may be holding him out based on his innings total. James was a relief pitcher until this year began. His last few outings the coaches have done a good job of getting him out of the games to rest his arm. My guess would be that they want to keep his innings at a minimum since he has not thrown this many innings in a season in his career. Again, just my opinion.

He pitched Sunday, but only threw 67 pitches over six innings against Charlotte. I thought they were saving his arm so they could move him up this week, but doesn't look like that's the plan.
Our midweek starters, Cockrell and Talley, basically split the Tulane game with each throwing 4+ innings so if they do hold McMahon out we'd probably be going all staff Saturday.

Probably something to that theory. James has thrown more innings this season than he had in the three prior seasons combined. They also held him out of Fall practice after being converted to a starter during Summer ball.

My guess is that if Saturday's result doesn't affect our seeding we will see any pitcher who hasn't thrown the last several games to throw an inning or so just to get them some work before the tourney starts. Hopefully we still play to win as at this point RPI wise every game can be the difference

What you mention may be part of why he's remained our Sunday starter, also. You are generally looking for your Friday guy to go deep into games. Carroll has been at 94-109-91-94-105-108 over his last six starts.

RE: Baseball closes regular season 5/14-5/16
One interesting thing I noticed about Cody Carroll's starts.

He has not given up an earned run in five of his starts....and given up just one earned run in two others.

His best seven starts:

SLU: 0 ER in 7 IP, 8 K, 1 BB
Troy: 0 ER in 8 IP, 4 K, 6 BB
FIU: 1 ER in 7 IP, 8K, 3 BB
LT: 1 ER in 7.1 IP, 6 K, 2 BB
UAB: 0 ER in 8.1 IP, 10 K, 3 BB
Marshall: 0 ER in 9 IP, 8 K, 3 BB
Charlotte: 0 ER in 7.2 IP, 6 K, 3 BB

That's 2 ER in 54.1 innings for a 0.33 ERA with 50 Ks and 21 BBs in his best seven starts. A WHIP of 0.85

In his other six starts, it would be 27 ER in 32.1 IP for a 7.57 ERA with 27 Ks and 21 BBs. A WHIP of 1.77

Really, aside from one so-so start (Oakland), the kid is lights out or he's getting lit up.

Just statistically speaking it looks like control/walks have been the biggest issue. Basically averaging a walk every other inning.

Pitch counts are somewhat misleading. Carroll is a strikeout pitcher and also walks many more batters so his pitch counts tend to get higher. The WKU was one of the few times James was hit hard this year so he came out after five innings and the FAU game was stopped by rain after 3 innings. The past two games there was really no reason to extend McMahon with 6-0 and 7-0 leads after six innings.

That's definitely been the big difference between Carroll and McMahon Hits per innings and batting average against are nearly identical, but walks twice as many batters.

Home runs also a big difference. Of course, that can go back to control.

He kind of reminds me of McInnis early in his career in that they both had outstanding breaking balls--different breaking balls but they both could struggle to control them, which always seemed to make the difference for them.

...which leads to teams hitting him pretty well. .136 and one HR in seven good starts. .303 and four home runs in six bad starts.

That last inning pretty much sums up the last quarter of the season for us.

Lead off single, double and you now have runners on second and third with nobody out and promptly score exactly zero runs. That's why we're not going to win a championship this year and will probably be lucky not to get swept this weekend.
