UAB to vote on Football June 1
Hope for our UAB brothers: http://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.com...l-freeuab/

"Conference USA has already made the decision to cut ties with UAB in the aftermath of losing the football program. Each Conference USA member must be a member in all sports, so the loss of football hurt UAB in that area, but if the school acts quickly to pretend it was all a bad dream then perhaps there is a chance Conference USA might reconsider its decision, which it should if UAB commits to bring football back to life."

RE: UAB to vote on Football June 1
Here's my view.

If UAB gets football back..

1) Be glad for the UAB community
2) Be glad that CUSA will have to take them back, thus saving the Belt from a raid
3) Be glad that CUSA will have to, in effect, absorb two 'greenfield' type programs in a process that would take years.
4) And be glad that a precedent has been set that if you try to kill FBS....they'll be hell to pay. I think that precedent has already been set.

And now the bad news for some of us

1) USA and others might lose some of the players we were counting on to fill some holes in our roster. I think we'd keep most of them anyway.
2) A UAB freed from UAT interference might be a much stronger competitor for recruits.

---

Overall, I think the benefits from UAB keeping football outweigh the risks from UAB keeping football. Besides we can compete without taking advantage of others misfortune.

---

But I have a sneaky feeling that Watts is going to kill football on June 1. The fact that they haven't scheduled a press conference is deeply troubling. If one isn't scheduled prior to June 1, they answer is most likely 'we investigated but no'.

---

Even if UAB comes back...its amazing how quickly things can fall apart. I'm pretty sure the worst thing UAB could do would be to try to bring it back too quickly (where they'd perform poorly). So they'll likely try to hang off on bringing it back to FBS for 3 or 4 years.

Any player that enrolled at another school would have to sit a year. There is no free backsies in the NCAA Manual. So any player who transferred is done with UAB unless they are prepared to sit a year.

In the long-run, yes UAB could be a strong competitor for recruits, short-term they will be pounded on the recruiting trail by opposing coaches.

The Task Force was also charged with determining what financial resources are needed beyond what UAB has previously committed to its athletic programs in order to reinstate a consistently successful football program and to determine if external, private funding exists to sustain such an effort.

So how much money will it take to fund a consistently successful football team? A 50 to 100 million for a new stadium comes to mind.
Does external sources for funding exist. I doubt it seriously.

I still dont believe it will happen. They are waiting on the report watts wanted then will vote on whether to bring football back.

We plan to make an announcement by June 1. This announcement will be made via our website, social media channels and by email when an official decision has been reached.

Translation: The fix is in, suckers.

Yikes, if you aren't planning to talk directly to the media.... no that doesn't look good at all.

From AL.com just now:

Ominous signs for UAB football's new D-Day

Yup... it's over UAB. I'm truly sad for you guys.

If Watts and Co. hired CSS to do the study then I'd say there is a 99% chance it will back up their desire to kill football. Nearly every consulting study done will work towards the conclusion the people in charge want even if the data doesn't completely back it up.

We saw this at App in the late 90's when fans first made a big push for I-A/FBS football. The admin was completely against it, but they hired Carr Sports (how fitting) to do a study. The study concluded a move wasn't feasible, because we would lose too much money. The fans then started running the numbers provided by Carr, and they actually showed us losing much less money as a I-A team than we were as I-AA! The fix was in and it took a complete change in leadership and a decade of work to get to FBS after that.

Watts would have to say he was wrong. I have seen to many guys with power over something that would never say that. I imagine he is a piece of crap like they are.

I wish I could see it happening but UAB football is going away forever. Next will come all the talk of what CUSA will do, whether the Belt will lose a member, etc.

RE: UAB to vote on Football June 1
GS went through the same thing as App. Our former president and AD were dead against going FBS and we also hired a consulting firm to study it. Not surprisingly the conclusion was that it was not feasible for Ga. Southern. We get a new president (who is a huge football fan) and a new AD and in a matter of a couple years we enlarge Paulson Stadium, build a really nice football operation building at the stadium and boom we are in FBS.

Make no mistake -- the leadership of a school and specifically the president and AD have a huge influence.

Watts intended to speak directly to the media. However, the governor refused to have the Alabama National Guard in attendance so the media event was cancelled.

UAb is getting all this so called support from the community that had years of opportunities to support that program. Any support and pledged money will be short lived and not recurring every year. That is the real problem, Birmingham has proved for years it will not support UAb football, why should anyone believe now that they will support that dumpster fire.

It may have been a dumpster fire by design of the BoT, but doesn't change the fact that it was a smoldering trash heap for many many years.

I hope they do a 180 and reinstate football. The politicians of Birmingham should unite and show their might.
