She made a lot of money for 57 wins. This is a huge hire for Frazier.

Word on the coaching grapevine is that Dick Bennett and the Bennett family would have plenty to say about the way things went down if not for that buyout also purchasing their silence. That's a chunk of money that could have been saved.

Thanks Jiff:

Quote:Bennett signed a contract extension through the 2017 season in 2012, when Jeff Compher still was the school’s athletic director, after the team made the Mid-American Conference tournament quarterfinals.

It's not easy to fire somebody for cause. Schools almost always end up paying up when they want someone to go away.

This rings very similar to Phillips extending Ricardo

Ricardo never got extended. Phillips hired him and hightailed it out of town a few months later

Phillips and athletics were forced into hiring Ricardo by the man controlling purse strings back then: Eddie Williams. Saying Phillips "hightailed it out of town a few months later" implies he stuck Huskie basketball with him and there's nothing further from the truth. Sorry, Jim Phillips did so many good things for NIU athletics; if you want to talk about carpetbagger ADs, start with O'Dell and Compher.

Ok it was Groth with Judson, there you f'ing happy. If you use this board as your gospel I feel for you. My point was it wasn't the first time a coach was extended, and then let go. You can sleep happy now though as I have the correct coach and AD

MAC Quarterfinals = extension
What would have happened if she made it to the finals = lifetime contract?
Make NCAA Tournament = Walk on Water status.

although Phillips will say he made the hire. But i always thought it was Williams. Phillips would not hire a guy who did not even visit campus. I am sure every big AD opening has Phillips at the top of their list. How much would UI pay to get him if they fire the present guy.

RE: HuskieWire with info on Kathi Bennett's departure
Search firm RFQ sent out for new head coach...bids will be open 2pm May 29th.

Brief Description / Scope of Work:

NIU is requesting proposals for a professional executive search firm to assist NIU in conducting a nationwide search for a well-qualified Head Women’s Basketball Coach.

Duties in the search process will include the following:

a) Develop detailed outreach and selection plan.

b) Recruit and screen qualified candidates.

c) Assist NIU with completion of required evaluation records for all applicants.

d) Conduct thorough background and extensive reference checks on candidates that NIU and vendor agreed upon.

e) Present an appropriate selection of candidates for interviews.

NIU also requests that prospective vendors include organization, scheduling, and facilitation of all interviews with the candidates as an option that may or may not be included in the eventual award.

The scope of work will end when the candidate selected by NIU has accepted the head women’s basketball position and has remained in the position for two years.

Odd ending...wonder if that is a standard request.

HuskieJohn, thanks for posting this not just because it's informative, but I like what you've noted. I hope this is an indication of how Frazier is one of the wiser ADs today. Piggybacking off the other thread on "Importance of buyout," this is an example of how you would hope schools start holding these search firms accountable. Maybe stating that the person has accepted the position and remained for two years is the new way of saying we don't pay you the entire sum until it proves to be a good hire. Maybe it's the kind of clause that says and if something comes up that your background search didn't find or you didn't share, we're keeping some of our money.
