UMass is an above average MAC team huh? That's weird.

Considering their W-L record the last few years, this one's a shocker.

No wonder their AD did not get the Pitt job when he interviewed.

I like how EMU, GaState and SJSU managed to squeak over the 15K line. I would love to know actual butts-in-seat attendance for those - probably under 10K

This is why you don't typically see any MAC teams in best of the rest type senarios. They have some decent performers---just zero fan engagement---even by G5 standards.

That's an interesting point. To extend it to other teams, it would be interesting to see 2014 home attendance for the teams that have won 20 or more games over the past three seasons. Who else wins a lot of games but still doesn't fill the stands.

The schools in bold averaged 25% above the FBS minimum attendance standard. What makes that shame worthy?

Is that a challenge? 04-cheers

I'll see what I can come up with. It may take a while.

Those in bold we all know are fabricated. No way has Georgia State or EMU put 10k in the stands for any game last year, let alone averaging 15k. The others on this list are below the FBS standard. NIU is indeed shocking considering how well they have been doing.

Under 20K. If you want to compete at the highest level, 125% of minimum is a pretty low bar

The rule book says 100% of the minimum once every two years is sufficient.

Anything else is rather arbitary and in the eye of the beholder.

Of course if you draw four people per game and those four are Warren Buffet and three of his friends you might be able to compete at the highest level with ease.

RE: NCAA release 2014 attendance data
I changed Wedge's parameters a bit, because 20 wins over 3 years proved to be a pretty low bar. Instead, I took (only) G5 teams that had no fewer than 8 wins in each of the last three seasons. The results are as follows (team, total wins, 2014 avg attendance, increase/(decrease) from 2013):

Northern Illinois...35....13,563......(7,106)
Central Florida.....31....37,812......(4,272)
Boise State..........31....32,504......(1,862)
Utah State...........30....20,467......(2,796)
Cincinnati............28....28,840......(2,931)
LA- Lafayette.......27....25,775........(201)
East Carolina........26....44,786.........801
Bowling Green......26....15,228.........(30)
BYU.....................24....57,141.....(4,084)

Surprisingly, only ECU had an increase in attendance, and their average was more than 2,000 below their 2012 mark. For the Pirates, 2013 was a transition year. They were still stuck in a C-USA that was backfilling with unattractive Sunbelt teams while waiting to move up to the AAC. When they got to the AAC, a bunch of those teams had historically bad years. Nevertheless, not a good look for schools preening for an invite to the big dance.

It's pretty bad if your numbers are fabricated and they're still this bad.

That is pretty sobering that those schools can't keep the attendance up. Surprised at Boise.

Interesting, thanks, Ken.

I would think that if a team is winning 8+ for a few years in a row, their attendance is close to as high as it's ever going to get, unless they get a brand new stadium or win a national championship or something like that. The exception might be a team for whom only 8 wins seems disappointing (eg Boise State) or might get the coach fired (eg Alabama).
