To my knowledge there have been three end zone designs and only "eagles" is painted. If we paint the endzones blue, the guys that are more traditionalists than me will keel over.

For a program that has only been around since the Reagan administration, you all do have some die-hards when it comes to tradition. I have to think some may protest new paint for the school buses.

you damn right 05-mafia

Some of it is tradition and some of it, I think, is superstition. Quite a lot of it is superstition actually. As you know, nothing changed at all for a looooong time and when it did, bad things happened. That reinforced many of these 'traditions'.

Don't tell anyone but at least one of the school buses has been replaced. 03-shhhh

South Georgia is no hotter than South Alabama and South Louisiana, and both S-B-C schools in those areas have turf.

Maybe it will cut down on the gnats near the playing surface.

I second the notion this is a win in the App State column.

They should all be grass. Have you ever stood on that stuff on a hot summer day? It's at least 15 degrees hotter on the field than in the stands. Play at night if possible.

I dunno... Any rain has to drain somewhere. I propose a VERY slight tilt in the field that funnels rain water into stagnant pools on either side of the visitors' bench.

Watch out for malaria, ya'll

For a minute, you guys were starting to sound like Virginians. We will protest the demolition of a utility shed if it's been up longer than two weeks.

I have. We do 6 pm games only until the end of October when we typically have homecoming which is at 4 pm. Works out for the best as it leaves the fans all day to tailgate.

I played on our field against Mid Tenn back in the late 80's during hurricane Hugo. The water was gushing over the ends of the stands but the field drained very well and hardly puddled. There have been some issues as of late with our natural surface but those things can be fixed. I for one wish we would stay with natural turfgrass but its a done deal I suppose. Teams used to complain about how short we got our natural surface and would say let that grass grow some. Probably the best natural playing surface I ever walked or played on, and Ive been on some nice ones. Our drainage works great and its just hard to beat a nice natural grass surface. I think alot of this also has to do with the fact that we are moving all football operations to the stadium, practice fields and all. So at first there is going to be alot of practices at the stadium, which would be hard on the natural grass. New practice fields are to be added as well at the stadium. This could be an omen, moving the practice fields away from beautiful eagle creek.

Cost... Turf is much cheaper than maintaining grass

If the maintenance cost has been $5500 per year (seems low), I don't see how the cost of turf would be a savings. Unless you're getting it installed for less than I've ever seen $5500 multiplied by the useful life of turf doesn't even put a dent in the installation cost, unless they are factoring in the savings of not having a practice field. Are the numbers in that article wrong? How does Turf become a savings?

Grounds crew salaries, if it's coaches doing it then they are taking away from other things. $55k a year sounds more like it... It cost 5k to landscape a house. Feetilizer, pesticides, equipment etc... No way it's $5500 a year. Trust me it's a savings, we have it on our football and baseball. You would spend more than $5500 just to paint it

The fat lady hasn't sung on this yet, and I wont believe that she has until I see the turf coming up. This field really drained well and grew really nice grass until it was uncrowned and recrowned a few times. There is a small movement to keep the Tift Bermuda, I'd be willing to donate just a little more to keep it natural grass (and maybe a little more if they returned the original "crown").

I really, really hate to hear this. I've really liked Ga. Southern's "old school" approach, and a grass field is a huge part of that. Football was meant to be played outside, on grass.

Just don't change conferences 2/3 times. Replacing the logo will show the aging of the green. We know and it was only 2010 when we got the new turf but by the time we came to the SBC it had faded badly; as you can see looking at the stitched in SBC logo vs the rest of the field.

I believe the only two G5 programs with grass are ECU and FAU.

I don't really study up on that sort of thing but I find that hard to believe. Even the California teams have turf? Are you only counting OCS?
