The keys to this weekend's sweep of FAU were ...
... mental domination and intimidation.

Quote:“We're used to getting that big hit,” (FAU coach John) McCormack said. “Guys are pressing and trying to do too much. ... They're trying to wrestle the game and not play the game.

"It's the big bully on the block and we haven't handled it well,” McCormack said. “We haven't handled it well at all.”

Not to mention that the Florida Owls have their own Greg Oros to contend with, Saturday's home plate ump, Joe Henry.

Quote:Umpiring has been an issue for both teams in the first two games and nowhere did a near comical strike zone make more of an impact than in the bottom of the sixth.

With a full count, two runners on and no one out, FAU third baseman Ricky Santiago watched a pitch low and away sail into Rice catcher Hunter Kopycinskski's mitt. As Santiago started to first, home plate umpire Joe Henry called strike three.

“It wasn't questionable, it was a bad call - and you can write that I said that,” McCormack said. “It was a bad call.”

Santiago headed to the dugout and, without turning toward the umpire (sic), says he said “That's terrible.”

Henry ejected Santiago from the game. Then told McCormack that Santiago told the umpire he was terrible.

“It's disappointing that a grown man acts that way,” said McCormack, still angry after the game, referring to Henry. “The adult in the situation, the guy that's getting paid to umpire a game, the adult, he overreacted. And it's sad that we have to deal with it now. He doesn't have to deal with it. He'll be here tomorrow. He gets his game check, his meal money and hotel, but we have to deal with it.”

Here's a link to the FAU OwlAccess article on today's (Sunday's) game: http://www.fauowlaccess.com/articles/130...-away.aspx

Quote:For FAU coach John McCormack it's a disappointing outcome for what he had called the most important home series in program history.

"I don't want to sit and say what went wrong,” McCormack said. “Let's celebrate what Rice did right. That's a good team. It's a veteran team. God they can pitch. ... “You saw a veteran team that wants to win, that knows how to win, and they did a good job today – and all weekend.”

Way to rise above the odd strike-zone calls and continue the domination this weekend, Rice. WooHoo!!!

Gee whiz! It's pretty clear who is NOT the adult in this situation.

To play devil's advocate, if there was no prior comment in the game from Santiago that put him on Henry's watchlist, then this ejection, along with the strike call, is utter garbage. I'm sure we would have still won the game, but that was a pretty big swing in momentum perpetrated entirely by the umpire.

The discussion assumes that it occurred as related by Santiago and McCormack. Not sure that's exactly what happened.

Yeah, I'm also not sure it was about what he said as much as the manner in which he said it. He didn't say whatever he said and then walk toward the dugout. He said something, started walking, then fully turned around and demonstrably yelled while facing the umpire. Umps don't like getting shown up like that.[/align]

Gee. I didn't notice McCormack saying much of anything about those two third strike calls on Chandler when the ball was clearly a good deal more in the right batter's box than it was over the plate.

I don't know how bad the strike call was relative to the rest of the game (it sounds like it was a big zone all game long), but the strike call in question for Santiago's ejection was pretty bad. As for Santiago's and McCormack's words and actions, those speak for themselves.

Just my opinion, but I thought Hunter K. was vital this weekend. He caught 27 innings, the last 18 of which were in very uncomfortable weather. Given the fact that many of the players were affected by the heat, humidity and food, I was very impressed. I think he deserves a lot of credit.

If you were watching the game you saw that shortly before the Santiago ejection the umps went over to the Rice dugout. Here's an explanation from the same article that Mike found.

Quote:About the same time Ricky Santiago was getting ejected, Rice coaches (most notably Clay Van Hook) began yelling at an FAU fan near the dugout who had been telling Santiago to take a pitch because Rice pitcher Kevin McCanna was struggling to find the strike zone. As the chirping escalated to include Rice players, Rice head coach Wayne Graham came to the edge of the dugout and angrily yelled at the FAU fan. Umpires told both the fan and the Rice dugout to quiet down, but Rice continued to goad the fan, who answered back and was removed by FAU police and administrators.

Highlight: My guess is that Rice was not goading the fan...

You're skeptical of the story that the unruly Rice organization, from reserve players to head coach, became enraged by an innocent but astute FAU fan who was merely providing helpful insight to one of the home players? You're obviously biased!
. . .
The more you look at that article, the harder it is to believe that anything that so-called "journalist" writes is a reliable description. If he were to write "Dog bites FAU team", I might put even money that in fact, the FAU team bit the dog.

Watching on the video feeds, it looked like the strike zone had the shape of a big bowtie, with its points extending down to near the dirt on the chalk of each batter's box.

Unlike our experience in the Savery-disaster game in Omaha, which also had an extended strike zone, our pitchers (and batters) seemed to adjust a little better than the FAU players.

from the game three story - find the problems with this sentence:

"Connor Teykl ripped a line drive that appeared destined for right field until third baseman Ricky Santiago speared it with a dive to his left."

Looks like Santiago just set a world's record dive.

Just ridiculous. Apparently, it's acceptable for journalists to be sore losers these days. Sad, but not unexpected.

There are bound to be hurt feelings when a team enters a contest with high expectations and gets absolutely thrashed. However, that does not justify local media members presenting slanted versions of contentious incidents. Really unfortunate.

Chuck King should write fiction…..oh, wait.

and Santiago was ejected in game two as he loudly dropped the f bomb on the hp umpire while throwing a temper tantrum at the plate. The fan ejected was the RF's dad. His head was in our dugout yelling at our players during his kids at bat and beyond. Coach Van Hook told him to get out of our dugout and he began screaming '1-9' this and '1-9' that...He had a buddy join him that piped down after the police officer showed up. The pic of Wayne is at the end of the altercation pointing out that Sangers' dad was a "50 year old juvenile delinquent." The daughter of the "50 year old juvenile delinquent" tried to rescue him earlier by telling him he was an embarrassment. Soon after, a police officer standing behind him, warned him, took him behind the dugout and warned him again and he became physical. Lucky he didn't get arrested. Awesome or pretty bad theater, depending on your point of view :)

Sorry, chucky....many Rice fans in the vicinity. Your lack of journalistic integrity has been exposed.

So let me get this straight. Sanger's (RF) dad was very loudly yelling into the Rice dugout in the bottom of the 6th, encouraging his son at the plate to take pitches because he thought McCanna was losing control. So Sanger walks on 4 straight balls, moving Endris, who had singled as leadoff batter, and Santiago comes to the plate. Sanger Dad keeps yelling at Santiago to take pitches. McCanna promptly throws two balls, then a strike. Santiago fouls off 3 straight pitches while Sanger Dad keeps telling him to take. So Santiago takes the 8th pitch, which the umpire calls Strike 3!

Seems to me that McCormack should stop bitching about the umpire and just get Sanger Dad to keep away from all future FAU games.
