Short answer: Denver does not have baseball or softball. It's not that they want to join the BW, it's that the BW will be their best option if the Summit collapses and neither the Missouri Valley or WCC invite them.

Long answer: Grand Canyon, Chicago State, Utah Valley - three reasons why Denver left the WAC in the first place. No offense to those schools but Denver's a bit of an academic snob. They would not return without putting up a major stink about those three.

The bloated Big Sky, with 12 members already? Even with Northern Colorado in the mix, they'll look to the other Dakota schools first. And as we're all aware the Big Sky loves their football. Denver U, not so much.

MW won't let anyone in without football, so they're out automatically. The WCC turned down Denver in favor of Pacific, although they could revisit Denver as a travel partner for BYU.

But why is the Summit collapsing??

The I-P schools and WIU obviously aren't Horizon material. Who else is leaving and to where??
NDSU, SDSU,and USD get invited to the Big Sky.
The Big Sky slims down by slipping NAU, SUU, Weber, NColo, and Idaho St to the WAC.
The Summit get UMKC and Chi St back.

RE: NKU to the Horizon League
Lipscomb and SC Upstate are real geographical outliers(esp. considering these school's budgets).Of course you could say that about many conferences.

Lipscomb's dream would be the OVC,however, they have 12 for BBall.

UPState could save a LOT of travel dollars by being in the Big South as their twelfth member-might be a reason for no invite-I just am not familiar with their reasoning.

IF the ASUN were to lose one or both-they might fold.Doubtful-but possible.
The UAB situation could play into all this in an indirect way.I would expect UAB to go for MVC-1st with Colonial,SBC,SOCON as secondary choices.

One Question: Would NKU change THIS summer or wait one year? Anyone know?

Congrats to Northern Kentucky for being the first Kentucky school to leap to a Midwest based conference.

Kentucky (SEC)-The B1G has never looked their direction.
Louisville (ACC)-Almost joined the MAC in the 60's and regularly played Kent State.
Western Ky (CUSA)-Was 1 vote short of joining the MAC back in 2005.
Eastern Ky (OVC)-Flirted with the SBC but never was a Midwest candidate
Murray St. (OVC)-Rumors of talking with the MVC.
Northern Ky (ASun)-Joins the Horizon League!

That is doubtful.

The Horizon like the MVC is another conference that has thrived by not over expanding. Other schools will always be there.

I still think the move for UAB is to try and package deal with Belmont to the Southern Conference. Chatanooga, Mercer, Furman the Citadel and VMI.......there are still some good schools in that conference. Its definitely a step up from the OVC, ASun and Big South.

Being in suburban Cincy, it's not nearly as big a stretch geographically and culturally as some of the other Kentucky schools.

TAMU-Commerce is the only D-II school applying to D-I this year, that's for the open spot in the SLC. NJIT, UNA, Nova Southeastern, Lincoln Memorial would be my best guess for the A-Sun.

I'm struggling to find a link to where I read it earlier, but yes. The word is that they will be moving for this coming school year.

I was thinking this sort of thing in the beginning. I am happy to see NKU associate North and not South. They are part of Cincinnati and it makes much more sense to connect with other schools in Ohio and the Midwest.

West Ga, Ga Regents, Clayton St, Nova Southeastern are just some of DII Ga-Fla schools that could go to DI and ASun.

The Big South needs football schools. Kennesaw St is more likely than SC-Upstate and Lipscomb. Liberty and Coastal Carolina are at risk for the Big South as it needs more football schools, like Kennesaw and UNA.

There are some MEAC schools that are supposedly unhappy there. A MEAC or two might be a decent bridge to NJIT. There's some rumors that UAH might go DI too. UAH just started lax and has hockey, so its a rare bird in the south.

Thought Tarleton St only was talking with the Southland. If the former E Texas St (Commerce) goes too, the DII Lone Star Conference could be in trouble. That may be why they've been expanding west to UTPB, OPSU, and I think ENMSU.

NKU to the Horizon League
NKU presser will be this Monday:

http://www.cincinnati.com/story/sports/c.../27041055/

If the Atlantic Sun falls apart, it's the Florida schools that might have the hardest time finding a home. If UAB doesn't move, though, could the Sun Belt add another non-football member? Lipscomb gets them in the Nashville market, Jacksonville (FL) actually used to be a member of the conference, and USC Upstate could be a travel partner for Appalachian State. There would be no real reason to do that, though, unless if the Sun Belt just isn't going to 12 in football, or if UMass will indeed be the 12th member.

The Atlantic Sun may also be able to raid the MEAC. It could add five football playing schools to get to six, and still leave the MEAC as a compliant FCS conference (6 football, 8 overall) as well as keeping Big South football alive (the same six members it had during the 2014 season).

Atlantic Sun Football:
Kennesaw State, SC State, Howard, Delaware State, Hampton, Norfolk State

Big South Football:
Liberty, Coastal Carolina, Presbyterian, Gardner-Webb, Charleston Southern, Monmouth (affiliate)

MEAC Football:
Florida A&M, Bethune-Cookman, Savannah State, NC A&T, NC Central, Morgan State

The Atlantic Sun could even send Kennesaw State to the Big South in exchange for Monmouth football if it wanted to add NJIT for everything else; if the Atlantic Sun is adding Delaware State, NJIT/Monmouth gives them a regional rival.

From what I understand NC AT might be the most likely MEAC school to leave, they voted against the creation of the celebration bowl.

NCCU and Savannah State also voted against it.

I far as I know Tarleton is staying and the LSC is for sure adding UTPB and W.New Mexico

Oklahoma Panhandle St joined as a football only. Those moves really moves the conference west. Surprised TAM-Kingsville isn't making DI noise, as they are the SE fringe now. Eastern NM is already a member. NM Highlands will be supposedly announced.

The News-Press beat writer for FGCU, says Columbus St, Augusta St (Georgia Regents), and Nova Southeastern are likely candidates for the A Sun.

Atlantic Sun better have a replacement candidate soon as they'll be down to the bare minimum requirement of 7 for an auto bid to the NCAAs.

If those dominos reach the WAC, they'll likely reach the BW as well.

BW is OK, but the WAC may pickup a school or 2 if they fall the right way....which is what I was getting at, not that the WAC will lose schools.

I know. Just holding out hope that Denver (with travel subs) will fall into the BW laps when all is said and done. The WAC could very well pick up UNO from the Summit.

Just curious... why do you want DU in the Big West?
