Yep! I am a HUGE Seawolf fan... I am from Los Angeles but went to UAA from 1994-1998. Then Grad School in San Marcos. Now I live in San Antonio! I still follow the Hockey and Basketball teams. What ya think about the new arena up there????
I love the new stadium but I'm surprised they didn't build it much larger with ice to accommodate the hockey team too versus the Sully. I'd have loved to see the Seawolves and the Anchorage Aces (ECHL for those who don't know) have their own venues with an OCS for hockey.
When I moved down to Mobile both University of Alaska and UAA were considering moving their basketball to D-I like their gymnastics and hockey but I haven't heard a word since... have you? IIRC, even Coach Larrabee hinted I might be playing D-I before I graduated when I was being recruited back in the big hair 80's.

That article makes me think UAB will probably reinstate football and remain in CUSA. I now believe things will remain as they are for both of our conferences. Everyone wins.

Problem is.....Ray Watts, plain and simple. That guy doesn't want to bring it back because it would go against the BOT. (who's your daddy?). Why is he even still there and making this decision? Take those pledge dollars and "buy him out"

RE: Life for UAB Football?
The only reason this has legs is due to an anomaly of a season and they actually started getting some attendance. I don't buy into the idea that the community will long term support this program. Yes, if they reinstate the program, the first game back will be highly attended, there will be good season ticket sells, but if will drop over the next couple of years and they will be back to playing in front of hundreds of people again. If they don't build an OCS there will be the same excuses, Legion Field is scary, in a crime ridden area of town, which it is in a less desirable area, however, I've been to plenty of games there and never had an issue. Other games and international soccer haver 45-60k there, but it isn't good enough for UAb fan.
Coach Clark is an excellent coach, he will rebuild a winner and then he will be hired by another school and UAb could have a hard time finding someone that can recreate his success.

RE: Life for UAB Football?
I get that their fans are excited about this report. I also see that this report is just like the other report, it supports what the people that paid for the report want it to support. I just see all this as a little to late, if this kind of support would have been all along, UAb wouldn't be in this position now. For their fans I want their program to be reinstated and successful, as their rival I will punch holes in everything they have to say.
If they want football, they will accept it and celebrate it no matter the situation that it is in, and they didn't do that when they had football. They used excuses for lack of support instead of just supporting their program and players. Their fans had their opportunity and they blew it, not the UA BoT. UAb wanted football and the BoT allowed it, yes that's right, they allowed UAb to have football, they are the controllers of that school and they have final say what happens on that campus, good or bad. And when UAb had football, for 20+ years, it gained no local media support, it gained no local financial support, UAb didn't do the things that it could have done to grow support for that program, the fans didn't do the things they could have done, like actually going to the games. Don't cry foul when it's gone when you didn't take advantage of it when you had it.

Yup, UAB fans are scouring that report for every kernel of good news but they keep forgetting this statement by the man who controls the program's fate:
Quote:"We will consider the report's findings, along with other important, valuable and mission-critical data, in order to make the best decision for UAB going forward, guided by our vision, mission and strategic plan."

If I'm Watts I say bring it back.
If he says no, the board despite wanting it to happen, offers him up as a sacrifice to appease UAB fans. If he says yes board cans him for not staying with the plan.
He's out no matter what so say yes, force the board to be the ones to say no and at least look noble losing your job rather than lose it looking like a patsy.

I agree Watts is out either way, however, even if he says yes, he doesn't have the authority to actually reinstate that program.
I still think that program is done and will not come back, at least not soon.
Maybe if they do join the MVC, there is a chance at FCS in the future.

I think Watts would love to say no again because he has a narcissistic personality. I think the BOT will force him to reinstate and he will "retire" after UA hires a pres before the new school year.

What has the UA BOT done to make you think they would do that?

He will say "NO"... again. And if I were him I'd go into a privatized witness protection program or move to Homer, Alaska where they'd leave the lights on for him.

RE: Life for UAB Football?
A month ago I gave UAB a 5 percent chance of bringing back football. Now I would put it at about 40 percent. The momentum for it returning is gaining steam but I still think at 40 percent chance it still is an uphill battle

If you're right, I expect that either USA or ULL will be exiting the SBC shortly. I think USA may be the favorite right now.
