You can't make this stuff up.

Quote:The university will add add homosexual, female, transgender and multiple racial incarnations of the Scarlet Knight to more accurately represent the student body.

Wonder where you got that from? :)

Also, I already posted it on the existing Rutgers thread down below.

Yeah, I got it from the Spin Room. I thought it was appropriate here too. 03-lmfao

I have to ask. How do you portray a homosexual mascot? Do you dress him up as one of the Village People or something?

I also have to ask - is this a serious story, or is it a spoof?

RE: Rutgers not necessarily making a fool of itself
The broadcast is wrong. The student govt. has asked for a change based on the idea that the mascot was "too Caucasian", but no one in the university has made or announced any changes.

On Red Eye this week, it was suggested that since a mascot is a caricature, they might not like the final results of their request. The question was also raised: would the student inside the "ethnic" mascot have to be of that same ethnicity?

This is just another non-story generated by various on campus organizations who have no power to enact what they vote on. Hell if the student government is only voting to change the mascot we are doing well. Less than fifteen years ago the Rutgers1000 (a professor association) voted to kill all sports scholarships. Today we are in the BIG for sports and the eggheads get to be in the CIC for academics.

I don't think being more ethnic or inclusive is a problem. ND has had a black leprechaun and WV has had a girl montainman. The problem is how to portray it when our mascot is a caricature. It would cost $ that we don't need to spend to go buy a bunch of new costumes in all the colors of the rainbow. So the choices come down to ignore the student vote, or do a redesign where the arms and face are covered by armor making it ethnic neutral.

I would ignore the student vote. Next controversy?

They could always have the mascot travel with Village People impersonators. The Village People had a diverse racial makeup too.

George Mason University went through the same challenges 20 years ago. The 'too white' mascot was replaced with The Mask, a muppet (Gunther), and now a green and yellow painted "human".

Ole Miss proposed mascot is neutral however does have male looking face and body but I'm pretty sure the suit doesn't have sexual preference or any sex organs so it's neutral mascot that has no hair.

That looks like Ole Miss asked one of their baseball players to pose for a photo with the flag.

Wait a minute! So, it's offensive to have a Native American warrior as a mascot but it's ok to have a these characters. Good grief.

Who's going to be afraid of a gay knight?

Not Rutgers' opponents.

Well, this is another fiasco that can be blamed on Julie Herrman. When you have an AD which said that she wished the largest paper in the state would go under, is it any wonder that the local press would report on an article from the student paper and run with it? I'm guessing that the upcoming Rutgers B1G tour will be interesting.
