MW agrees to have OOC games with other MW teams
http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2015/may/...-thompson/

A juicy bit of info that wasn't in other articles. (last paragraph)

At issue was that SDSU due to cancellations was put in a bind to find another team to play this year. The only team SDSU was able to find to play them was non-schollie San Diego.

Not quite like the issue of the ACC regarding missing rivalries but still puts the MW in the scope of playing conference teams as OOC.

That's a bit of spin there. It wasn't impossible for SDSU to find a 12th game for this year, it's just that they wanted another home game badly enough to choose a home game vs. a non-scholarship FCS team over a home-and-home series with another G5 program where SDSU would have had to play this year's game on the road.

They would have had the same issue if they tried to schedule a non-con series with Air Force (for example) unless AFA was willing to play at SDSU this year on the first weekend of the season.

The last paragraph says that SDSU requested a rule change that allows MWC teams to schedule other MWC teams as "non-conference" games. That was apparently not allowed before.

I'm glad the MWC AD's rejected changes to the playoff eligibility system, and I hope the ACC doesn't mess around with it either. There's no point in having divisions if you're not going to reward the winners with a PO game.

I don't think any conference was considering keeping divisions while still taking the two highest ranked for the CCG.

But point still well taken.

Perhaps, but Cal would have done the same thing if they couldn't find a 6th home game.

"SDSU ran into scheduling issues for a couple of reasons. The Aztecs had a series scheduled with Navy that would have included ‘15, but that was cancelled when both teams appeared to be heading for the Big East in 2013. When SDSU opted to stay in the Mountain West, a non-conference series with San Jose State was eliminated because the Spartans are part of the MW.

In working to fill out the ’15 slate, John David Wicker, senior associate athletic director, said he received verbal commitments from a couple of schools who later reneged. Wicker said one particular school changed the parameters and wanted SDSU to travel first. There were “really good conversations” with one SEC school, Wicker said, but it didn’t work out."

But, I was surprised the MW will now allow it.

Wow, SDSU didn't schedule with USA until January. So they had TWO open OOC slots in January?? And USA only became available when UAB collapsed, leaving a game for USA to fill at the last minute.

How does that happen? Someone appears to be asleep at the scheduling switch.

Cal.-San Diego is one of the largests student enrollments in California. They should be in the Big West, not in D2. But, if they did add football and grew their stadium big? Would the PAC 12 snatched them up where they to play the big home game in the NFL stadium until they get their own campus? I know they were interested in Cal.-Davis and Cal. Poly to be part of the PAC 12 since they are in the Cal system with UCLA and California.
