Do some racists call black people thugs because they are racists? Absolutely... but that doesn't make it a racial slur unless a white person can't also be a thug. Said differently... a racist can use a slur... but that doesn't make it a racial slur. It is only a racial slur if nobody would ever reasonably or even generally refer to someone of any other race by that word. I think it's fair to assume that people who grew up in more diverse areas are less likely to be racist than those who didn't.

I'm not sure that diversity of race has that much to do with racism. Whether you believe that NYC or Jackson, Mississippi or Dallas, Texas is an example of a racist area, NONE of them lack in ethnic diversity.

I think it has more to do with the conditions under which you live...

Power is often gained by creating a common enemy and blaming that enemy for the ills of 'the people'. That allows 'the government' (or any other group) to extract power from the people in order to fight that evil. Often throughout history, that evil has been based on ethnic or religious differences. The Klan in this country itself was fundamentally founded by preying on poor white people's anger that they didn't have homes, food or jobs, blaming the emancipation proclamation and things like sharecropping by former slaves for it. Germany blamed the Jews.

So 'hardship' creates an opportunity for people to exploit things like jealousy or fear. To the extent that hardships are often concentrated in areas... AND that it is easier to exploit things when you have a concentration

I agree with what you said and the charts posted seems to have blown my assumption out of the water.

I just have always attributed racism to ignorance and therefore falsely assumed that people who live in diverse areas would understand that all people are the same and would become more tolerant of each other.

Once again it seems I over estimated the goodness of Americans.
