When folks turn on their TVs Saturday afternoon and start channel surfing, you want them to easily recognize who you are. OU, UT, and Michigan will never change their uniforms. It's tradition. Over time, that means a lot more than keeping up with the latest fads.

Yeah? That's what Ohio State and Notre Dame thought too. So, you don't think Oregon is easily recognizable???

No, he's right. You both are. For programs with 100+ years of football tradition, I think that's the way to go. There's an established cache there. The exceptions are the brand flagships such as Oregon (Nike) and Maryland (UA).

For programs with 4 years of football tradition, like UTSA, or even ~20 years like several other C-USA schools, the benefits of changing uniforms are more pronounced. I like the way Rice does it and I like the way we do it.

I just think you have to roll with the times. There are those in the Marshall camp that NEVER want to change uniforms...especially the helmet. I actually had someone tell me that alternate uniforms do not affect recruiting (which is crap...just ask Oregon/Baylor..etc).

A few years ago against Houston, we broke out Green helmets (which we had not worn since 1984). I thought they were really sharp, but there were many who hated them.

As mentioned before, Southern Miss WILL be changing uniforms. From what I have gathered, we will be going to a sleeker, predominately black uniform similar to ones from the past. We will also be doing away with the god awful two tone pants and "crackle paint" numerals.
I think sometimes there is too much of an effort to have the next big thing in regards to gear. We should just stick to the old K.I.S.S. method.

I actually hated the two tone look at first because I was a few deep and saw USM in black. Then on another play, the camera was trailing the players and they were gold. I was like, 'WTF is going on?" Once I realized it, I really liked them.

On one of our pay boards, a member wrote that his young son kept getting confused when we would change possession. 11 guys running off the field with black pants and 11 guys running on the field in gold pants. He thought there was a third team.

Yeah, they tried WAY too hard with this first set from Russell. I think the intent of the "crackle paint" was to be a stone motif, i.e., a nod to "The Rock."

What I'd absolutely love to see is something really close to our first Nike unis, but with the Guy-era sleeve stripes that were on the recent throwbacks. I always dug the old school look of those stripes.

Go back to what we had when Fedora was here.

Simple, to the point, and it looked good.

All of our Nike sets looked good.

The issue with the Russell unis is 1) they're just a standard base template, the same design used in all-star games outfitted by Russell, and 2) from there, they tried to make it "unique" with silly gimmickry, i.e., the stone numbers and ridiculous 2-tone pants.

Glad to see them being overhauled. It'll be one less connection to our low-water mark remaining.

Ohio State and Notre Dame shouldn't have broke with tradition. The change is ugly. Oregon doesn't have to worry as much as Rice about reinforcing it's brand being that it's on national television every week and always in the top 10. Being that Rice only gets national exposure about twice a year, it makes it even more vital that it's brand be consistently recognizable, IMO. We've finally found a classic look that we like and we want to reinforce it.
