Get real. The separation is evident in the TV deals. Six G5 schools who were going to sit at home get an additional TV appearance, a fan culture building experience, and what amounts to a second spring practice.

In what we are those schools worse off playing than if other schools are telling their recruits well you know we won six and went to a bowl, they won seven and sat at home playing XBox.

Pittsburgh ACC
Virginia Tech ACC
Temple American
Illinois B10
Oklahoma St. B12
Middle Tennessee CUSA
UAB CUSA
Old Dominion CUSA

So the G5 need roughly the sane number of bowls as the P5 have.

AAC has 4-5 bowl games so called "P5" opponents

- Birmingham bowl vs SEC
- Military Bowl vs. ACC
- St Pete Bowl vs. ACC (every other year)
- Armed Forces bowl vs. B12 (every other year)
- Miami Beach bowl (likely to be traded out for P5 opponent)
- Hawaii bowl likely will have BYU like Miami did last year.

That's great for the AAC. On the other hand, the MAC just lost a bowl game vs. the B1G last season that had been running for a while in the Detroit Lions stadium. A new bowl was promptly created, in the Detroit Lions stadium pitting the B1G vs. a P5.

So I'm predicting more of the same.

The more the merrier in my opinion. However, as long as they don't jam these in between the new years and CCG games. There should be a steady buildup. I love watching 6-6 teams in bowl games in mid to late Dec, but not in Jan.

That's great for the TV viewer, but not great for the athlete who has to study for and take finals while preparing for the bowl team -- in some cases away from campus.

In my opinion, finals week should be a dead week (other than supervised workouts by the strength & conditioning staff limited to X hours) for all athletes. No practice, no film study and most certainly no team travel.

If that meant all bowl games would have to be played the week before NYD, (to give the teams enough time to practice at the bowl site from the end of the finals dead week, and so on) then so be it.

UConn should be 4-8 this year. Hopefully there's a bowl for us.

You never know. That could be good enough, depending on how things shake out. With the new bowl games, about 2/3 of FBS teams will be in bowls. I figure 5 wins will get you in. But 4? Who knows?

New bowls don't happen unless ESPN wants them.

And ESPN doesn't want new bowls unless they generate decent ratings in a time of the year where ESPN needs content; unless they generate a profit.

In a cursory review of the ratings the last couple of years, many of these smaller bowl games generate better ratings than most G5 regular season games.

So if ESPN can get these new bowls relatively cheaply (i.e. they are profitable), expect the trend to continue.

That said, I think we are close to the saturation point where almost every .500 team goes to a bowl.

This means that FBS programs are even more dependent on FCS programs to pad their win totals, unless they change the eligibility rule (which would be ridiculous). If anything, it puts pressure on FBS to allow more FCS games to count for bowl eligibility.

During the past four seasons these are the actual numbers:

Teams with 6 or more wins, % of total FBS teams, Total wins vs FCS

2011 74...61.7%...91
2012 76...61.3%...98
2013 81...64.8%...98
2014 83...64.8%..100

AState has played four straight years post-NYD. It isn't a bad deal at all for the players. We completely shut down practice a few days before finals and resume for a few days after finals. The players are dismissed for Christmas and come back post-Christmas for a few practices, fly to game site and practice a few more days.

We played a pre-Christmas and players were going from finals to practice, put in two hours or so then head to study hall to prepare for finals the next day, and a couple players were unable to march in graduation. They held a graduation ceremony for them in a meeting room at the team hotel.

If the player experience matters, third Saturday of December bowls would fade away.

This is good news to get 8-4 and 7-5 G5 schools to get a bowl spot. We have seen many of them get looked over for a 6-6 team. A 7-5 Texas State was left out for a 6-6 South Alabama.

Yep, and 8-4 Western Kentucky was left out the year before that and 9-3 Louisiana Tech in 2012 after the Liberty Bowl changed their mind at the last minute.

The only thing I want is bowls played in diverse places and not the same cities, even if they're in different stadiums. Put one in Tokyo, Ireland, London, Paris, etc... And the positive is that the players will enjoy it too. The biggest negative is getting passports for parents and fans on such short notice but if a conference/team is slotted for a bowl they should be prepared anyways.

I approve this. It means a solid 4 weeks of a bowl game nearly every day. Now if only we could get enough #MACtion and Sun Belt games mid-week like there are in November year round. Then CFB would be watched the MAJORITY of days from September to the second week in January. I'd rather enjoy that. :)

Airfare for two people to Sydney, Australia from Atlanta (major hub plenty of players from the area) for a pre-Christmas bowl will run $5500. Tokyo $3300, London $3000, Paris $2700, and Dublin $2100.

Absolutely would be a phenomenal deal for the kids not so great for parents or the average fan.

It's even tighter than I thought. Thanks for the #s ken.

My two teams are CUSA & SEC, so I am on one hand happy for more G5 access to bowl games. However, those additional bowls are all G5 vs G5. I find it much more interesting to see G5 vs P5. Especially since the P5 teams so rarely play G5 away from home.

A lot more bowls added since then but the 2003 10-2 NIU team that defeated then ranked Alabama and Maryland along with ISU didn't go bowling either.

On a side note I am totally for removing of a win vs a FCS team as a qualifying 6th win for a bowl game.
