Ball State freshman wins MAC golf championship
Johnny Watts, a Ball State freshman, won the MAC golf championship Sunday, dethroning long-time champ Kent State in the process. Miami won the team championship.

RE: Ball State freshman wins MAC golf championship
Great showing by some freshmen: Miami's Patrick Flavin won FOY, KSU's Ian Holt finished 2nd, one shot behind Watts. Things looking up for a competitive golf conference in coming years.

Miami withstood a challenge from Toledo, but finally won comfortably. Ball St. was in 3rd place entering the last round, but outside of Watts, really struggled Sunday and finished 7th.

KSU finished 5th, their worst finish in a very long time--15-20 years? After graduating two of their best players ever last year, there was a lot of pressure on some freshmen who were erratic all year. They are bringing in a couple of top international amateurs from Iceland next season. Iceland! You have to really want to play to get to that level in Iceland.

Playing in Iceland should have them prepared for golf in the Great Lakes area for March and April. Brilliant recruiting strategy.

Our coach is from Canada and KSU has had a long history of getting Canadian players. Same theory here: they want to come play in a warm climate.

RE: Ball State freshman wins MAC golf championship
Why is Men's Golf a spring sport; August, September, October & early November are better weather months than March, April and the first half of May.

Golf is fall and spring, but the conference and NCAA tourneys are in spring when the weather is the best. I know KSU played in five invitational tourneys in Sept.-Oct. The March tourneys are all down south.

Thank you, I thought some tournaments were scheduled in the fall as well. Begs the question, if Golf can be played both fall & spring why not baseball & softball?
