Absolutely. People who don't follow CUSA know who Rice is. I have to explain to them who UTSA is.

Also being 1 hour south of the one biggest athletic brands in the NCAA draws attention from them. But UTSA has potential with their growing campus and city.

I disagree. People in Houston don't care much for Rice. I based UTSA on their interest they generate, nearly 30k a game, and its just an opinion, but its the way i perceive it.

Hmmm never heard that one.

Rice play in the SWC for 70 years and has won the CWS. Not to mention, take all 12 other CUSA schools and combine their money (endowments); and it still wouldn't equal the money Rice University has at its disposal.

RE: Who are CUSA's greatest athletic brands?
For pure brand name recognition among the Texas schools, my order would be as follows:

1) Rice
2) UTEP
3) UNT
4) UTSA

Yeah, Rice's football attendance is small, but they're nationally recognized for their academic standards, have a crazy big endowment, and are a former member of the SWC. Even though they're a private school, they're first. UTEP is 2nd in my eyes. I also believe more people (especially Texans) recognize UNT than they do UTSA because frankly, UNT has been around since 1890, have had football since 1913, and have been on the 'football map' since Mean Joe Greene became a household name with the Steelers.

UTSA is gaining ground, but having only been established in '69, and only having football for 4 years now, puts us last in my mind. Yes, our program has good attendance, Coker has brought some instant recognition, and we made national news for our unprecedented strides in the first 3 years of our football program before our fall in year four. We've also made great progress in recruiting from year one to now. But to me, the term "athletic brand" refers to the overall perception by people of all ages, everywhere, not a particular age group, and not a particular region or state.

Absolutely. People who don't follow CUSA know who Rice is. I have to explain to them who UTSA is.

That's what I was basing my brand on. I was discussing CUSA with someone the other day and he wanted to know who all was in it, so I wanted to list the ones he would probably be more familiar with first... I think I said, " Tech, Southern Miss, Marshall, UAB, UTEP, Rice, and a bunch of newer programs." That's our brand, imo. But having the newer programs allows us to build our brand. Schools like WKU, ODU, UTSA, and Charlotte have the potential to strengthen the brand, but it just takes time.

I think he's basing his opinion on how their stadium looks on gameday. That doesn't necessarily translate into whether people are aware of who Rice is. Which is why having Rice lower on a "fan interest" list might be more accurate than a brand awareness list. I think people in America know Rice pretty well, it just doesn't translate into butts in seats on Saturdays.

Lol. La Tech at 5th? With those whopping 5 tournament appearances with the last one coming in at 1991? We've been 4 times the last 10 years. Toss La Tech out of the top 5 for sure. You certainly belong in "the rest" category.

C-USA needs to scoop up Georgia State. Lots of potential.

The Sunbelt is great fit for Georgia State 05-nono

But they got that market thing goin' on. Think potential.

Is that why the SBC picked them? They do give you guys a little punch up in mbb.

I was on the fence on that. Couldn't put Tech with the rest just because of Karl Malone, PJ Brown, Paul Milsap, and 3 straight conference championships in the past 3 years. Malone by himself makes Tech some kind of brand. The rest don't have that kind of brand, imo.

I have to plead ignorance on ODU's recent history. I had no idea. ODU probably belongs above "the rest" as well.

This conf is so spread out and we're not a bunch of P5 schools so each region has more brand awareness for schools local. This is hard to do for all of us on a national scale and this has been brought up a lot as we discuss all our new conf mates. I had no clue who NT, UTEP, UTSA, etc were when joining and I was googling them just as they were googling ODU. I was familiar with the eastern schools and Rice because of their school pedigree but wasn't familiar with their history on a detailed level.

Branding points for La Tech for a very proud history of WBB. Also to ODU and WKU. Three national titles as a group in the NCAA "era" (since '82).

I got to experience most of the bands at the basketball tournament in March. I was blown away by all of them, esp. Louisiana Tech and Southern Miss.

I'm not disagreeing with your premise, but by that logic you would have to include just about every school. We all have somebody famous. Ever hear of Justin Verlander? I think he's a pretty good pitcher in the Major Leagues.

True, but is he considered the greatest pitcher of all time? Malone is probably the greatest power forward of all time. Scored more points than everyone but Kareem Abdul Jabaar.

When I think of CUSA, I think of USM football history and Rice in Baseball. Obviously, Marshall has some recognition in football as do UTEP, UAB and Charlotte in B'ball. jmo.

I think Malone and Bradshaw are on a different level than some of the other "famous" people from some of the other schools in the conference. Heck I think they're on a different level than our other hall of famers.

Greatest pitcher of all time? Maybe not but he does date Kate Upton.
