Conference Title Game deregulation
I think that if conference title game deregulation passes you will see conferences get smaller and not bigger because nobody wants to finish in 13th or 14 th place. You might even see a all sports conference in the northeast like Joe Paterno wanted 40 years ago.

How about the National Athletic Conference with Boston College, Buffalo, Connecticut, Louisville, Massachusetts, Maryland, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Syracuse, Temple, West Virginia

No.

ALL SPORTS: BC, SU, WVU, PSU, Pitt, ND/Rutgers (I guess), UMD, VT
NON-FOOTBALL: GT, UCONN, NOVA, STJ
Or bust.

I don't want Temple, Buffalo, UMass, or UConn football.

I wish conferences would get smaller. 8 or 10 team conferences seem ideal to me for cohesiveness and OOC purposes. But obviously, there is a one-way ratchet effect here, as voluntary expansion is a whole lot easier than voluntary contraction.

RE: Conference Title Game deregulation
I think that several things would have to change. The first being championship deregulation. The next would have to be the expansion of the playoffs. No need to be in a huge conference if the playoff is expanded to 8 or 16 teams. The last would have to be the reduction of money from these conference networks. If al car te takes over in the near future. Then these conferences actually might see a reduction.

who knows what happens if they approve the change. I know if i were in the SEC, ACC or Big 10, i would never vote to lower the rule from 12. I'd probably raise it to 14 to make the pac 12 expand if i did anything.

I think you have a point here. Conferences are too big. With 14 members or more, teams start getting lost in the shuffle.

Wow...that is truly awful and I'm glad you're not in charge of realignment!

Conferences aren't getting smaller no matter how much some people for the "good ol days" of 9 team bus leagues.

Heck, no matter how much the Big 12 tries to convince us that smaller is better, the fact is, if they actually could attract a bunch of good P5 FB schools from the other conferences, they'd go as high as 16 themselves.

Wow! That really is horrible. I would love to see a new Southwest conference. Just not what you have come up with. My take would be this.

(SWC)
1. Arkansas
2. A&M
3. Baylor
4. LSU
5. New Mexico
6. Oklahoma
7. Oklahoma state
8. TCU
9. Texas
10. Texas Tech

It will never happen. But this is about as good as anyone could hope for in the return of the SWC.

Yeah, while I get how that might appeal to the old SWC fans (myself included), that SWC would be over quicker than the original Big 12.

It would be the 2 fundamental flaws that destroyed the original (Not enough TV eyeballs and too many teams all competing for the same trough of Texas 3, 4 & 5 stars recruits) but on steroids compared to the original.

Conference Title Game deregulation
How about the P7:

SEC reverts to 10 (no Missouri, Arkansas, South Carolina, Texas A&M)
ACC reverts to 9 (no Pitt, Syracuse, Louisville, Notre Dame, Virginia Tech, Boston College, Miami-FL; regain Maryland)
Pac 12 reverts to Pac 10 (no Colorado, Utah)
Big Ten reverts to 10 (no Nebraska, Maryland, Rutgers, Penn State)
Big 8 is reborn

New SWC - Texas, Texas A&M, TCU, Baylor, Texas Tech, Arkansas, Utah, Louisville
New Big East - Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Miami (FL), Virginia Tech, Connecticut, Rutgers, Boston College, West Virginia

And of course Notre Dame remains a football independent.

RE: Conference Title Game deregulation
These are all making me sad.

But here's my 9 team (9 is superior to 10. Equal home and away in both FB and BB) realignment which I'm sure wont please everyone either. Plus it divides into an 8 team playoff quite nicely.

Connecticut
Temple
West Virginia
Louisville
Cincinnati
Miami

Big 9
Penn State
Pittsburgh
Ohio State
Michigan
Michigan state
Indiana
Purdue
Illinois
Northwestern

Heartland Conference
Wisconsin
Minnesota
Iowa
Iowa State
Nebraska
Kansas
Kansas State
Missouri
Air Force

Clemson
South Carolina
Georgia
Georgia Tech
Florida
Florida State
Auburn
Alabama

Gulf Coast Conference
Mississippi
Mississippi State
Arkansas
Louisiana State
Tulane
Oklahoma
Oklahoma State
Texas
Texas A&M

Pacific 9
Oregon
Oregon State
Washington
Washington State
California
Stanford
UCLA
Southern Cal
Arizona

Great West Conference
Arizona State
New Mexico
BYU
Utah
Texas Tech
Texas Christian
UNLV

But in the current college sports economic system, (1) conferences are the entities that negotiate media contracts, (2) if teams add value to a conference, then it can be worth expanding above 12, (3) it's almost impossible to kick the lowest-value teams out of any conference, thus if you want Maryland, you have to add Maryland rather than replacing Purdue with Maryland (which any detached observer would do if they could do it to maximize TV value).

An alternative way to increase leverage is for two conferences to combine their media rights, without merging, and sell the rights to TV networks collectively. (That's an idea the Pac-10 and Big 12 actually kicked around, before the Pac-16 attempt).

I disagree a little. Louisiana produces a lot of talent each year and both Arkansas and Oklahoma produce some talent. Usually around 10-20 FBS prospects per state each year. I know that's nothing compared to the several hundred that Texas produces. But its not terrible either. The conference that I proposed IMHO would be far better than the old SWC and either version of the Big 12. As far as competition goes and that would bring in viewers.

RE: Conference Title Game deregulation
At the P5 level, the relatively small, geographically compact conference model is gone. The concept of playing every team in the conference every year, twice a year in some sports, is history. The popularity of football, the explosion of television, availability of air travel and yes, outright greed killed them all.

The new model is a conference large enough to provide inventory to keep the TV dollars flowing. Small regional divisions, pods if you like, allow teams to keep some rivalries. NFL type scheduling to allow for the best TV match ups.

I'm surprised this isn't a thread advocating UCF to the Pac. That's David K's style.

I like how he just makes an appearance like this completely out of the blue. Like the good friend you haven't seen in years every few years randomly showing up at your doorstep.

SWC title is owned by Houston, SMU and Rice. The Big 12 Texas, Arkansas and Texas A&M waived their rights to that name.

SWC:
Houston
Rice
SMU
UTSA
UTEP
North Texas
Arkansas State
La. Tech
Tulsa
Missouri State
New Mexico or New Mexico State
Memphis

Would be a good 12 team football and basketball league.
