NFL draft results
Number of players drafted by conference (#picks per team):

SEC....54 (3.9)
ACC....47 (3.4)
PAC....39 (3.3)
B1G....35 (2.5)
B12.....25 (2.5)
AAC.....12 (1.0)
MWC... 10 (0.8)
USA.......6 (0.5)
MAC.......4 (0.3)
SBC.......3 (0.3)

This, of course, doesn't tell the whole story. Having a player picked in Round 7 isn't the same as having a first rounder. If you weight the picks, by assigning 7 points for a first rounder, 6 for second round, etc., you get a different picture. Using the weighted results, and calculating the points per conference member, the order is a little different.

PAC.....15.6
SEC.....15.4
ACC.....13.5
B1G.....10.7
B12.......8.2
G5........1.6

Nearly 80% (200/256) of the players picked were from the P5. 14% were from the G5.

Only one player from an independent team (Notre Dame) was drafted.

One G5 team, Fresno St, had three picks. Eight others had two apiece.

In the ACC it was lead by Florida State with 11 players selected, Louisville with 10 players selected and Miami with 7 players selected.

I believe Alabama also had 7 picked. I don't know if any other team had more than that.

RE: NFL draft results
I'm amazed that La'el Collins from LSU, expected to be a first round pick, went completely undrafted just because his former girlfriend was killed. I can understand him slipping, but nobody took a chance, even in a late round.

For Collins, that's actually a break, since he is now a free agent and can sign with any team. Hard to say what kind of money he can command compared to what he would have had as a high draft pick. Hope he has a good agent.

If cleared he is apparently going to try to re enter the draft next year...

Update....once he clears his name he will sign a Free Agent Deal with a Team...if cleared he is going to get a good 3 year deal.

I disagree. Al Golden at least had some success at Temple. What the frak has Muschamp ever done as a head coach.

Collin's CAN"T get a good deal. As an Undrafted Free Agent, he cannot be offered more than the minimum salary, and each team only gets a small pool of bonus money to use on all of their UFAs (about $100,000).

After the 1st Round the money is pretty equal...he can make it up if they pick up the 4th year option...the main difference is he will really have to earn that Rookie Tender down the road

RE: NFL draft results
He may or may not be cleared.

He cannot go into next year's draft because he was undrafted this year.

I am fairly sure he cannot go in a supplemental draft as he was draft eligible.

As krup mentioned, he cannot get a "good deal" as a UDA.

He will have to meet escalator in order to make his money the 1st 3 years if he is cleared.

There is also an inherent difference between draftees picked within rounds 1-2 and those between 3-7. Early round draft picks (due in large part to the large investments the teams are making) are much more likely to have their salaries guaranteed. Secondly, the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement has a provision referred to as the “25% Increase Rule” which prohibits a rookie’s base salary plus bonus from increasing by more than 25% each year of their contract. This is why larger bonuses then allow for a significantly increased salaries in subsequent years as compared to later round picks. The 4-year minimum base salaries for players in this year’s draft are as follows: $435,000 (Year 1), $525,000 (Year 2), $615,000 (Year 3), $705,000 (Year 4).

If eventually signed to a contract, each rookie drafted will get a 4-year deal, whereas undrafted rookies are only eligible for 3-year contracts. Furthermore, first round players have exclusive fifth-year options in their contracts, versus players drafted between rounds 3 and 7 who are only eligible for a proven performance escalator (PPE). Fifth-year options allow teams to hold on to the rights of their first round draftees for an additional year, assuming that they inform the player that they are picking up said option between the off-season of their third and fourth contract years. Alternatively, the proven performance escalator allows players selected later in the draft to receive additional compensation assuming they participate in at least 35% of their team’s defensive or offensive plays during the first 3 years of their deal. The league’s collective bargaining agreement also bars teams from giving rookies option bonuses, option exercise/non-exercise fees, as well as voidable years and salary advances… all of which are available to veterans

A mid second round pick from last year (#52) signed a four year deal worth $4 million+ with a signing bonus of $1.2 million and $1.8 million guaranteed.

That doesn't seem "pretty equal" with a UFA being able to make a maximum in 4 years of between $2-2.5 million with virtually none of it guaranteed.

Here is a good breakdown from CBS NFL Insider Jason LaCanfora on Collins situation:

Consider that based on a 5 percent growth in the pool, a first round tender for Collins would cost $3.9 million in year four and he would make $5.46 million over four years, virtually identical to the 42nd pick. Again, if Collins is close to the player he is expected to be, the first round tender would be no surprise. With a second round tender he'd make $2.7 million in 2018 and $4.3 million over four years. The 53rd pick, for instance, would come in at $4.2 million in this scenario. If Collins gets tendered at his original level, he'd make $3.6 million over four years. The 66th pick would have made $3.37 million in that span.

Maybe 5 percent will be a little high, so let's go on the low end and say the pool grows by just 2.5 percent. Collins still would fair well compared to other draft slots.

A first round tender for Collins in this case would be worth $3.6 million, he would make $5.19 million over four years, and the 45th pick, for instance, would have earned $5.16 million in that span.
A second round tender would net Collins $4.12 million over four years; the 55th pick will have earned $4.05M.
An original round tender would be worth $1.67M in 2018 and Collins would make $3.24M over four years; the 70th pick, for instance, would earn $3.22M in that span.
Let's say the growth is 10 percent on the high end.

Well, then Collins would make $4.5 million in 2018 on a first round tender, and $6 million over four years, more than say the 35th pick in this year's draft will have earned in that span.
A second round tender at this rate would mean Collins makes $4.7 million over four years, while the 49th pick will have pocketed $4.67M in that span.
An original round tender would net Collins $3.6M over four years, while the 65thpick would be at $3.4M in that span.
It's obviously still not an ideal situation, but by massaging his way out of the third day of the draft and into unrestricted free agency now, it could be by far the best of what is by its very nature a brutal situation. His team will be forced to make an economic decision on him after three years, and that's likely to be a lucrative extension. And even at the RFA tenders for 2018, he'd be making in many cases three times in that year what players drafted in the second and third round are earning in that year.

Yes, he will be locked into base salaries of $435,000 in 2016 and $525,000 in 2017 and $615,000 in 2017, and he won't get any bonuses. But the contracts for third-day draft picks are just as locked in. Collins gains greatly through the potential tenders down the road, and by getting to pick his team on his timeline whenever he is ready to move forward, there are some definite advantages to that versus having someone own is rights for the next four years right now on a seventh-round contract.

Trying to sell Collins not being drafted as a good thing is ridiculous.

-If he doesn't pan out, he missed $1-2 million in guaranteed money.

-The LaCanfora comparison numbers you posted are based on the assumption that Collins plays great, and the theoretical team which drafted him decides to piss a now-proven great player off by forcing him to play under all four years of his rookie deal without redoing it, which is not likely.

If he plays good enough as a UFA to get a first round tender after year 3, that would have been good enough as a drafted player to get a new contract after year 3, with the team being happy to rip up his rookie deal and lock him up long term.
