My sources indicate that Rice will have a top 5 class this year and be the odds on favorite for the Quidditch Cup this fall.

No word on if the adverse reaction to sunlight and speaking women will be an ongoing issue though.

Chances are high.

LHN money and Texas greed has already ruined the traditional sport of quidditch.

Now that Texas teams are dominating quidditch, Jim Delany and the Big Ten are demanding that the official start of quidditch season be moved back to April 1, with the national championship to be played in mid-August. 07-coffee3

If the PAC is coming- its coming for TTCH and TEXAS.

Here's the problem. I don't think Texas wants to go to the Pac12. They have threatened to do it 3 times now. Two times recently, and once when the SWC broke up. But they never join, mainly becuase they really don't want to deal with the travel time changes and they know most of the population lives in the Central/east time zones---so they want to play in a central time zone conference. they don't want thier tv games starting at 9 and 10 pm.

So if Texas renews thier GOR---what's the Pac12 going to do? They have a conference network that isn't making much money because there just are not enough cable boxes in the far west. Beyond the Rockies, 37 million people live in California and there isnt any other new states they can add with more than 3 million people. Beyond that, the only other western state with any significant populations is Texas (26 million). Any Pac12 expansion that does not get the Pac12 a significant Texas presence is a financial non-starter. Eventually, the PAC-12 has to get into Texas, with or without UT.

The bottom line there is that you have a long way to go before convincing ESPN that anyone other than the Horns or Aggies constitutes a significant Texas presence worthy of giving a P5 conference a big pay increase. Because it's all about the money. I'm pretty sure that if ESPN had said they would boost each current school's payout by a few million a year if Schools X and Y were added, that multiple P5 conferences would have given Schools X and Y a very long look. When the question is, "Do you want us to pay you $25 million/school/year or do you want $30 or 35 million each," then the powers-that-be listen carefully.

ESPN isn't the biggest factor for the Pac12. The Pac-12 Network is. Unlike the Big10 Network which is a 50-50 partnership, the Pac-12 Network is 100% owned by the Pac-12. The success of the Pac-12 Network is going to be primary revenue driver for the Pac-12 going forward. The question is---Is the Pac-12 willing to invest for the long term? My guess is that they are---but only as a last resort. They'd rather have ready made P5 schools.

IMO, within two years, Larry Scott will concede that a wholly-owned network wasn't the best idea and will sell half or all of it to ESPN or Fox. Then it just goes back to ESPN and/or Fox effectively driving the decisions by how many dollars they put on the table.

I know ESPN are driven to try and get several G5 and FCS schools into the P5 conferences.

West schools:
Boise State
Nevada
Hawaii
San Diego State
New Mexico'
UNLV
Fresno State
Utah State
Eastern Washington
Fullerton State
Gonzaga

Central:
Colorado State
Air Force
North Dakota State
Wyoming
Montana
Northern Iowa
Mankato State now Minn. State-Mankato
Wichita State
Arkansas State
Memphis
Missouri State
SMU
Houston
Sam Houston State
UTSA
UTEP

Midwest:
Illinois State
Northern Illinois
Western Kentucky
Central Michigan
Ohio U.
Toledo
Western Michigan
Bowling Green
Miami, Ohio
Dayton

Southeast:
UCF
Georgia Southern
Southern Miss.
Middle Tennessee State
USF

Mid Atlantic:
Delaware (because they have the same helmet design as Michigan.)
Navy
East Carolina
Appalachian State
Old Dominion
Towson
James Madison
Richmond
Georgetown, DC.

Northeast:
U. Conn.
U. Mass.
Buffalo
Stony Brook
Army
Temple
Marshall
Fordham
Villanova
St. John's. NY

Some schools have to upgrade, and others have to add football. But, can ESPN and other tv networks talk to the P5 to make it a P6 where the networks can formed a conference with the media darlings of the G5 schools? Or, could they create 3 conferences with schools to make it the middle ground?

How a crazy longshot idea?
What about a possible partnership with say the MW to boost the network. Saying giving the MW 15% to get more interest in the mountain states....yes, even though the population is not as much, there is still growth that is happening and can put the whole network in the whole western half of the US.
If the Pac can be more patient, they will come out ahead in the longer term. It takes time to develop. When the stat that only 20% of the population watch sports, it really hampers and quick growth for a conference network.

Boise and the surrounded areas have been growing, so there is promise there and with Eastern Washington as well. Colorado Springs and Pueblo is another one that is growing as well. Maybe western New Mexico as well. Las Vegas have not been growing recently. Reno seems to be growing still.
