I did just that and I see images of lots of black youth, whites and South Asians (where the word came from). Just because an element of black culture (rap) has adopted the word as part of the criminal image they wish to portray in their music, does not make it a racist word.

I see quite a few rappers who refer to themselves as thugs.

Growing up in pre-Tupac years, I'd often associate the word with union goons and mafioso types.

A lot of people do. There are countless programs and organizations that go to impoverished neighborhoods and try to get them involved in positive experiences and to show them that they do indeed have a chance at life. My company works heavily with a company called Living Classrooms that teaches kids from the bad neighborhoods life skills like cooking, gardening, woodworking, etc. etc. It helps some kids tremendously, but you can't help everyone. Some of these kids have such a horrible home life and are so angry from such a young age that they are resistant to any type of help.

Plenty of opportunities for the kids, if they'd only accept. I've been involved with several, including JA, but lots of the time the kids would rather do other stuff than listen.

I think we all can agree that raising our own kids to have respect for others and to do things the right way is of primary importance. For clarification...my following comments are not directed to you SE. Just my thoughts on this subject.

I was taught by my parents that I have a responsibility to give back to my community in some fashion. There were lots of influential people in my early life besides my parents that help mold me positively. I feel obligated to be involved in my community because of that. I chose to be very involved with youth athletics..both boys and girls. I hope that my contribution means something to one of them one day and they in turn do the same for someone else.

We have lost our sense of "community" and have stopped being "neighbors" to each other. It saddens me to see us slip away from these things. I believe much of this has a direct impact upon the problems we see all around us on the streets.

I agree. I also feel this way. But I also feel no pressure or burden to raise someone else's children. I'll gladly coach them in baseball though.

I you're coaching them, you are indeed helping to raise them. A. It teaches discipline, hard work, competition, "fairness" as in the real world isn't fair, merit, showing up on time, wearing a uniform- dress code, respect for authority, how to listen, follow orders, penalties for rule breaking and a thousand other things if done right.

B. For those 10 or more hours a week, you are definitely raising someone else's children. More and more over the nearly 30 years (yipe!) I've coached youth sports, it's become a babysitting service. Parents sign em up, drop em off, pick em up. A lot don't even attend the games, apparently don't give a schit. This past football season we had coaches traveling nearly an hour round trip in all four directions picking the kids up to get them to practice. Every day. The parent(s), who were often home at the time, never once did so much as offer to pay some for the gas...

And, no, Fitty, these were not a bunch of poverty situations, a couple of them live in 750- million dollar homes.

Don't even know why some of these people had kids in the first place.

I see kids everyday and the parents that entrust me to see them believe that I would be a good role model for their kids. I try to help them, give them and yes raise them in the short amount of time that I spend with them. You know what HRC would say. lol
