And....?
Is that suppose to make this sentiment legitimate?
No. I'm just pointing ot that it wasn't the media who wanted this to happen.
Look, the "N" word was acceptable for many many years before people saw it as racist.
It doesn't surprise me that people don't see "Thug" as racist. They won't for a very, very long time.
Nice bridge you've got there.
One word was specifically used to degrade a race, the other is used to describe people who commit violent acts and riot.
Not the same. Swing and a miss.
So how long till ruffian or goon is considered a racist term?
People are still trying to justify the use of the "N" word today saying if black people can use it, why can't I.
It's the same thing with the word "Thug" people will claim that it's acceptable and that they aren't refering to blacks when they say it. Eventually however, it will be on the same level as any other racist word.

I must say that it's appearing that way, and I'm not talkin' about these riots. They mayor and the president called the rioters "thugs." The thing is, when a football or basketball player makes a hard foul/cheap shot, said player is called a thug by the opposing fans. I've seen it all the time. Meanwhile, hockey seems to infer the cheap shots/fighting as apart of the game. It's completely hypocritical.
FTR, Clairton players were called thugs by a plethora of white people throughout the state of PA for this:

Thugs/Ruffians/Hooligans exist everywhere. This is really a non-issue.
Yep, thug describes any person with certain behaviors and can apply to any race/creed/gender, etc. Thug has never been and never will be a racist word. To think so otherwise is just foolish.

This is in a nutshell the problem.
I can't believe not a single person here recalls this very issue being brought up during the Richard Sherman fiasco.

Exactly.
Hockey actually allows and encourages fighting in their sport but god forbid it in basketball. Suddenly, the "thugs" are ruining the game.

The etymology of "thug" goes back almost a thousand years to India. Thugs, short for thuggees, were professional assassins and were predominantly Muslims.

Agreed.

Not really, they are just different. The primary antagonist of the John Singleton/Samuel L. Jackson (1998) version of Shaft was a thug and not some wanna be whose parents let him watch too much BET growing up.

Yes but language evolves. For example, in many circumstances bad means good and good means bad, at least in slang.

No, not really. The N-Word was a term that applied to all blacks. Thug is a term that applies to criminal blacks. Thug:black :: white trash:white.
Thug is a term that can be applied to any race. I'm not into "newspeak".
I guess you can have a white thug, but they are just mimicking black thugs. It is a criminal subculture, which is predominantly black.
When I hear thug, the first one that comes to my mind is either Putin, or some kind of Soprano's type enforcer.
In this context people throwing chunks of concrete, cinderblock and empty liquor bottles at cops, yea they're thugs.
Maybe it is just me and where I live and it is a regional thing. The hood rats around here even aspire to being and call themselves thugs. I always saw it as a black thing.

To me Thug = gangter, enforcer.
That's because What you think of is on line with the definition of the word. Once again our society is trying to redefine English words so they can be offended by something.
Thug, punk, ruffian, hooligan... Basically we should outlaw any word that tells it like it is. If you don't like a label, don't act like it.

Thanks for the reminder of that. It was around 94-95 we renamed our men's rec-league volleyball team the Jack-booted Thugs.
A few years later I changed it again to Gimme a Lewinsky, that was especially entertaining when we had the female refs...lol

I agree. I'm convinced some people wake up each morning just looking for stuff to complain about. When they can't find anything, they make up silly stuff like this. It's tiring but comical at the same time.
