Because Baltimore public schools were closed kids did not get their free school meals. I guess parents were actually responsible for feeding their kids during the day and that is asking too much.


A classic example of that happened recently in the middle of the Baltimore riots. While the National Guard was finally called in by the pathetically incompetent local Democrat leadership, Whole Foods wanted to support these brave men and women by providing them with free food.

The National Guard members are risking their own safety to keep people from burning houses, destroying cars, and devisating property. They are criminals and are ready to stop them.

But because of Whole Foods’ act of kindness, liberals on Twitter are losing their minds!

The same way they do when schools are closed due to weather, schools closed for holidays, schools closed for Fall/Winter/Spring/Summer break or even when the kid stays home because of illness.

Assuming the parent(s) work:
If a kid is old enough to be home unsupervised, he's old enough to make breakfast and lunch.

If the kid isn't old enough to be home alone, the responsible adult or teenager that the kid is home with should make the kid breakfast and lunch.

Assuming the parent(s) don't work:
Get off your lazy butt and make your kid breakfast and lunch.

Yo assume too much. Low income families cannot afford daycare in some cases and therefore have to leave underaged kids at home or send them with friends or family. If your friends and family are also low income, chances are they don't have food to feed your kids either.

Your parents were using the system to stretch their food dollars. I doubt if there were no free lunches that your parents would have let you go without something for lunch.

In addition to free school lunches and breakfasts, the poor get SNAP dollars to feed their families. The free or reduced breakfasts and lunches do not affect the amount a family gets in SNAP. If you use your SNAP dollars reasonably wisely you should have groceries for the month. If you don't use them wisely you make a trip to the Freestore.

It is not the job of Whole Foods or anyone else to feed someone's kids.

So what are they eating when they're away from school? How much is a jar of store brand peanut butter and cheap bread? It's not the best but damn it beats being hungry.

No one is saying it's their job to do anything. I was simply saying that children do feel the effects of not having free lunch at school. I know I would have if it wasn't for summer programs where the kids still got fed.

It was a normal thing for me and all the neighborhood to walk to school in the afternoon for free lunch. Our parents depended on it.

That too occurs here in Kentucky among impoverished white kids. They take advantage of free lunches during the summer. The issue behind this thread was the fact that for a couple days schools were closed and somehow, kids were going to starve. It's akin to the stories from Katrina where people spread rumors that there was cannibalism in the New Orleans Convention Center after two days of being trapped without help.
